The defeat at Philadelphia was a signal for so much better work
by the foot ball team as to enable State to give Yale a scare on a
muddy field and in a pouring rain storm. State gave the Elis
more trouble than any other team this season up to the date of
this game. Yale could make only two touchdowns in the first
half. Whitworth’s men not only gained ground but stopped
Capt. Rafferty’s best men with very small gains. Notwithstand
ing the wet ball only one bad fumble was made, and that by a
Yale man. Mcllveen gained repeatedly' through the line, and
Yeckley made good tackles.
It took Yale fourteen minutes to make her first touchdown.
With the ball from kick-off at her 30 yard line, Yale carried it to
State’s 20 yard line, where they fumbled and State got the ball.
They advanced ten yards before punting. Metcalf missed, but
Bowman got the ball and rushed it back ten yards to his 45 yard
line. Yale rushed to State’s 35 yard line. Here Metcalf made a
30 yard dash, but Rafferty’s men were penalized for holding.
Yale had to punt, and the ball rolled over the line. RockHvell
