Compulsory church attendance is a collegiate institution
which comes in for its share of hard knocks at the hand of the
undergraduate. "Nearly every college where the system is in
vogue has its story of attempts at evasion of the system. All are
similar, and to tell one is to tell all. The most typical, perhaps, is
that of the misguided youth who was called before the registrar
one morning and asked if he had attended divine service on the
previous Sunday. "I did," was his reply. '!At what church were
you present, Mr. Blank ?" "At the First church." "Is it possible?
Why, to my knowledge there have been no services there for a
month." "Oh, but, sir, I should have said the first church I came
to."
A story current at the writer's college is of two young men who
went to call upon a young lady of the town. Their hostess had been
dancing the evening before and was tired. They hadn't been danc
ing and so did not know that two hours had passed. So, in de
spair, the ,young lady resorted to strategy and managed to turn
the conversation until she could finally propose the riddle of the
eleven ciphers and the six lines :

The riddle was old, but they were young, and could not make
the sentence. So the young lady quickly arranged them thus :
good qod do go (Exeunt.)
We conclude with a pun which was made at a farewell party
given by a college faculty, to one of their colleagues who was
shortly to go abroad. The departing brother rejoiced in the name
of Levi. At the close of the reception it had been arranged to
make a gift of some books to the guest of honor, and one of the
professors had been chosen to make the presentation speech. His
opening sentence was : "Friends, this gathering has its Genesis, in
the Exodus of Leviticus from among our Numbers."
