    The Mechanical Department.
The senior mechanical engineers are designing an 18x24
high speed uon-fcondensing engine, and also a 14x36 Corliss.
Complete detail drawings of these machines are made as well
as collected drawing's. All drawings this year in the mech
anical engineering department are classified, numbered and
indexed. This affords an opportunity to consult any man’s
drawing at any time with a minimum amount of trouble.
The system of indexing adopted is a simplified form of that
used in commercial manufacturing establishments.
—Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio, has five debating
societies,
—Ex-President Cleveland has been elected a trustee of
Princeton University.
—Harvard, Yale and Princeton have an intercollegiate
news bureau. Nightly specials are wired from each of these
universities to the other two, giving the news of the day.
—Five hundred and thirty-five courses are offered by the
faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard for the academic
year 1901-’O2.
—The board of student control of the University of
Chicago has passed a rule that all social functions shall close
not later than one o’clock, and that they shall be on Friday
and Saturday evenings or on an evening preceding a holiday.
—The Athletic Association of Cornell has passed a rule
that the Varsity colors may be worn on caps only by those
members of teams or crews who have engaged in' inter
collegiate contests.
—One of the most popular sports at the Boston “Tech”
this year is the “Hare and Hounds” chase. These chases
