Navy’s one yard line. At the next attempt Scholl took the
ball over the Navy's goql line for a touchdown. Smith
kicked an easy goal. Score 11 to 6in favor of State.
The Navy then kicked off to State, and Smith returned
the kick. The Navy made the most desperate attempts to
score, resorting chiefly to fierce onslaughts on the tackles.
After gaining thirty yards the Cadets were held for downs.
With forty-five seconds to play, Captain Nicholls attempted
a fake kick. The ball was passed from center to fullback
and the fullback passed it to the quarterback, who had run
around behind the fullback to receive the ball. The quarter
back started to run with it, but State was on the alert, and
as the cry “Look out for a trick play” went around, Smith
dove through the line and knocked the quarterback off his
feet. As the quarterback was struggling to regain his feet,
Biesecker fell on the quarterback’s neck and held him fast.
The whistle blew, and State had won the game. Score, 11
to 6. Capt. Hewitt, of State, by reason of having his knee
thrown out of joint but a few days previous, was unable to
get into the game. Ruble took his place at quarterback and
played a star game. Scholl acted as captain, and played as
only Scholl can, —the highest praise that can be given him.
