A new literary and debating club to take the place of the de ceased Phoenix Society has been organized among the students, under the name of " The Jeffersonian Literary Society." At its first meeting it elected the following officers pro. tern.: Presi dent, G. K. Warn, 'oo; Secretary, W. H. Landis, 'O3. Its di rect object is to give all students an opportunity to gain skill in debate; while in its direct object is to prepare a team to meet Dick inson this__ coming winter in the third contest for the supremacy of the forensic stage. The State College Literary Club held its first meeting of the year at the, home of Mr. Irving L. Foster. Several interesting papers were read and commented upon, including some selec tions from the " Letters of Captain Dreyfus," by Mr. Foster. The first meeting of the Friday Club was held at Professor Buckhout's, and was a most enjoyable affair. The dedication of a recent book to Professor Gill fitly expresses the feeling with which he is regarded by all " State " men, as well as by the many college men with whom he has come in con tact elsewhere. The book, entitled, " Character and Conduct— Talks to Young People," is written by the Rev. Geo. M. Steele, D. D., LI,. D. The dedication addresses Prof. Gill as, "an ad mired scholar," a " rarely equaled instructor, and a genial and most ,delightful companion of many years." Dr. H. P. Armsby has been appointed a member of the Ameri can Committee on the Organization of Section 7, of the Fourth International Congress of Applied Chemistry to be held in Paris, July 23-31, 1900. Professor, Griffin recently celebrated his birthday anniversary by giving a dinner party to his gentlemen friends. The favored ones were sixteen in number, and all report a most delightful time. The evening was enlivened by stories and old college songs, Prof. Gill acting as toastmaster. Prof. Runkle has moved into the house on the campus recently occupied by Prof. Fernald.
