THE MEETING Or THE BOARD Or TRUSTEES College shall hereafter be published in July instead of in January of each year, in order that it may cover the United States Govern ment fiscal year. The next report will cover the eighteen months from January, 1898 to July 1899. The following resolution was adopted by the Board: " Resolved, First, That the action of the students of The Penn sylvania State College in abolishing from the Institution, now and for the future, the practice of hazing, is deemed by the Board of Trustees an event of such importance to the welfare of the Col lege and the indication of such a prevailing spirit of manliness and loyalty as to deserve special recognition and approval. " Second, That . the foregoing resolution be entered on the Minutes of the Board and communicated to the Faculty and students, by the President of the College." By far the most important matter considered by the Board was a letter from the Hon. Andrew Carnegie, a member of the Board, in which he offered to donate the sum of Sioo, ooo for the erection of a Library and Museum for the College provided the State would agree to make an annual appropriation of sio,ooo for its main tenance, without diminishing on that account its annual appropria tion for other purposes—using the following language: " The College is doing such great work for the State. that Ido not think any individual should contribute money to it for additional buildings unless the Slate agrees to maintain them. It is a duly which the State owes to its brighl young men who attend the College of their own State, instead of going to other' Slates for their educa tion. Born Pennsylvanians, they grow uit. Pennsylvanians." The Board appointed a committee, consisting of Gen. Jas. A. Beaver, Dr. Nathan C. Schaeffer, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Lawrence M. Colfelt, and Cyrus. T. Fox, Usq.., to draw up a memorial to the State Legislature,. incorporating Mr. Carnegie's offer. This was done on January 27th, and on February 2nd Senator Magee of Pittsburg introduced into the Senate a bill favoring the proposition.
