    ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT.
THE GETTYSBURG —STATE GAME.
NEVER within the past few years has the foot ball season
opened so auspiciously for State as it did on September
24th when, with little more than one week’s practice and
with a number of new men on the field, we defeated Gettysburg
by a score of 47 to o. Although it is true that some of our points
were won merely on account of the greater weight of our team,
the victory was due to the individual and collective excellent
work of our boys. Platt, ’O3, Hewitt, ’O3, and Scholl made the
greatest number of grand stand plays, but each member of the
team, although his playing was not marked by such phenomenal
gains, played an excellent game. There was more fumbling by
both teams than there should have been but with a little more
practice, this objectionable feature should be eliminated. State
did not at any time lose the ball on downs, but frequently lost it
by fumbling. Another decided weakness was in the kicking of
goals, for but two of the nine trials resulted successfully.
The line-up of the two teams was as follows:
STATE. POSITION
Curtin (Farr) right end Bennett.
Miller, F. F right tackle Brumbaugh.
Miller, T. H right guard Nicely.
Capt. Murray center . . . . ; Williams (Hickman).
