    The judges were Dr. Pond, Prof. Buckhout, Prof. Jackson and
Prof. Ihlseng. The honors were awarded to C company.
, A Civil Engineering Society was formed during the latter part
of the fall session, and the following officers were elected: Presi
dent, P. A. Kaiser, '9B; vice-president, Neubert, '99; secretary
and treasurer, Stevenson, '99•
The schedule for the inter-class basket ball games has been
arranged as follows:
Friday, January 21
Saturday, January 22
Friday, January 28
Saturday, January 29
Friday, February 4
Saturday, February 5
Season tickets will be sold for these games.
The Mining Department has placed on the shelves of its library
bound volumes of the periodicals of the last three years.
An observatory has been erected near the Horticultural Hall.
Great care has been used to get a good foundation. Thesis work
will be done there this winter by Kaiser, P. A., Morgan and
spenshade, and will consist in the determination of the latitude,
longitude and meridian of State College. The instrument to be
used is the fourth theodolite, which belongs to the Civil Eng.
Department.
The Dairy Class opened this year with a full attendance. The
class is made up of students of a higher standard than heretofore,
since they are of more mature years and have had more ex
perience. Mr. C. P. Van Dyke, who was a student in the course
last year and:is now butter maker for a large New York firm, has
been engaged to give instruction in this course.
The system of strength tests used here is the same as is used in
the leading institutions of this country. Among those who have
completed the tests, the ones having the highest number of points
are Haldeman, G. S., 850.1; Scholl, 841.4; Griffen, 828.3;
Weldy, 809.4; Rawn, 758.1; Connell, 735.4; Kaiser, F. A.,
720.5; Bolard, 697.8; Espenshade, 674.1, and Weaver, 608.3.
Those who failed to complete these tests on account of lack of
apparatus are at liberty to complete them at any time.
