    1897']
The largest score against us this season was made by Cornell at
Ithaca, on October 30, and never was a result more surprising.
In the first place, the weather was the very opposite of that which
one would wish for on the day of a game. During the entire con
test an icy drizzling rain fell, making the ball heavy and slippery.
Worse than that, the effect on the players was rather discourag
ing. Then, too, the element of ill-luck which has attended State
during this season was not absent on this occasion. In the first
half Cornell had the wind at her back to aid her, then, strangely
enough, when play was called for the opening of the second half
the wind had shifted to the opposite point of the compass and was
again whistling merrily along in favor of our adversaries.
Moreover, to culminate this conspiracy of the elements against
us, darkness fell on the gridiron long before the end of the game,
and aided by this cloak of gloom Cornell was able to score a
final touchdown in a most novel manner. When Mechesney
kicked off the Cornellians at once bunched together, and while
State was vainly searching for the ball Whiting, with the pigskin
neatly tucked beneath his sweater, was making tracks for our
goal line, which he reached in safety, to the intense amusement
of the cold, shivering spectators. The line-up:
