1896.] also made arrangements for several good short stories to be pub lished during the next fall. The annual reception of the Woman's Literary Club was given on Tuesday evening, May 26. The department of Mechanical Engineering has had the photo graphs of the Mechanical Engineering graduates of 'B9 and '9O mounted and framed. The class of 'B9 contained the first gradu ates in this course at State. It is the desire of the department to preserve in this way the photographs of its successive classes, which, when mounted and framed, will be hung in the Engineer ing Building. The reception given by the Vriday Club, at the home of Lieu tenant and Mrs. McCaskey, was a very enjoyable affair. The status of the bill at present before Congress for the Engi neering Experiment Stations at the Land Grant colleges is greatly improved. Though too late for passage this session its prospects for the future are encouraging. The invitations which have been received by the School of Mines for its summer school of 1896 have proven an embarrass ment of riches. Offers have been received from the localities visited during 1894 and 1895, The choice may be made in favor of Reynoldsville, Jefferson county, Pa., or Antrim, Tioga county, Pa., or both. At the former place the officers of the Bell, Lewis and Gates Coal Mining Company have extended the freedom of the Soldier Run Mines for surveying, and for examination of their equipments, which are not excelled anywhere in the State. Should the mining classes also visit Antrim they will have an itinerary, including matters of geological interest and coal-cutting ma chinery operated by compressed air or electricity. The value of these trips to the student is inestimable, and the gentlemanly con duct of the members of the classes participating in these schools spreads the name and fame of our beloved institution. During the last few drills before inspection a pedometer carried by one of the students registered for parade drills from lIA to .1 3 / 1 . miles; for drills with extended order, 2 to 2 1 3 miles, and for Callege Notes.
