President Atherton returned home Saturday evening, April
25th, after a three months' absence. The Doctor has been in
Prescott, Arizona, where he was forced to go on account of ill
health. He has, however, completely recovered, and we are
pleased to have him in our midst again.
The athletes intending to participate in the Inter-Collegiate
sports at Easton, Pa., on May z6th, are now in hard training.
The prospects for State are very flattering, and her sturdy sons
will no doubt win a number of events.
The sub-Freshmen and the Bellefonte Academy crossed bats on
Beaver Field, Saturday, April 25th. The " Preps " played an
excellent game, and easily won by the score of 15 to 4.
The college campus has been improved by the addition of four
new arc lights; two near the University Inn, one by the lower
gate, and the other half way between the upper and lower gates.
The .Electrical Department has been recently improved and en
larged. The laboratory and shops have been moved to large and
commodious rooms under the carpenter shop. The department
has purchased a new automatic cut-off engine of the Weston
engine Co., Painted Post, N. Y. The engine develops forty-five
horse-power at quarter stroke, or seventy-five horse-power at full
stroke, and is an excellent one. The rooms have been wired for fifty
lights, which may be used for a load or for lighting purposes. By
an ingenious system of wiring the current from any machine in
the shop may be sent to any other machine or into the testing
laboratory.
The trustees recently granted the department permission to
equip the Bellefonte Central R. R. as an electrical railway out as far
as the '"
V." Work will be started on this at once with the in
tention having it finished before commencement. The road will
be equipped with an open car of latest design, driven by two
General Electric Co. motors.
In order to choose the team to run in the Relay Races at Phila
delphia, a class Relay Race was held on Beaver Field, Satur
day, April 18th. '96, '9B, '99 and 1900 were represented in the
race. '96 won by about thirty yards; time, 3:45 minutes. As a
result of the race the following men were chosen to represent State
College Verse.
