1896.] It is time for those intending to take part in the midwinter sports to begin training, Basket ball is growing in favor here. Games are held in the armory nearly every aftetinoon. It is expected that several first-class entertainments will be given in the chapel during February. Dr. Atherton is taking a much needed rest of several months ,in the southwestern part of the United States. The three months' dairy course opened this term with twenty one students. There is one co-ed among the number. Dean Reber, who has been seriously ill for several weeks, has recovered sufficiently to be able to attend to his duties., The mining department is the recipient of a collection of sev eral thousand fossil fern impressions given by Affelder, '99. During the Christmas vacation the old electric light wiring was taken out of the main building and new wires put in throughout. The chapel orchestra has been reorganized with the following players: Piano, Miss Wyman; violins, McCaskey, Gray and Hardt; flute, Sprecher. During the cold weather at the beginning of the term a great many students took advantage of the fine skating on the ice pond below Thompson's spring. The equipment of the gymnasium has been enlarged by the addition of a punching bag, a twenty-two foot rope ladder and a very fine combination chest weight machine. The ten dollar prize offered by THE LANCE for the best story was unanimously awarded to H. M. A.ndrews, '9B, by a commit tee consisting of Messrs. Gingrich, Bowen, Shueler and Allen. A chapel choir under the leadership of Prof. H. H. Stoek has been organized with the following members: First tenor, Cochran and Fulton; second tenor, Houseman and Nesbit; first bass, Mac- Donald and Mallory; second bass, Painter and Keck.
