’96. A. W. Smith, sergeant-major of the college battalion, lias
been elected first lieutenant of Company D, Fifth Regiment. He
recently passed an examination entitling him to his commission.
’94. Paul B. Breneman and Louis W. Mattern recently re
ceived commissions as brevet second lieutenants in the National
Guard.
’96. W. A. Stuart, captain of the base ball team, has left col
lege to join the Franklin team.
Ex-’96. Meyers visited the college with the Lock Haven
Normal School base ball team.
’93. Rothrock has accepted a position as assistant instructor in
mathematics in the Indiana State Normal School.
Ex-’96. Morrow visited the college with the Dickinson team
■which played here on May 3. Mr. Morrow is attending law school
at Dickinson.
Ex-’95. Taylor recently passed an examination entitling him
to a commission as second lieutenant of Company B, Fifth Regi
ment.
’94. F. K. Mattern, formerly with the Harrisburg foundry
and machine works, has accepted a better position with the Penn
sylvania Steel Company, at Steelton.
M. J. Thompson, B. A., has tendered his resignation as in
structor in mathematics.
It is rumored that T. R. Beyer, instructor in civil engineering,
intends to resign. The rumor.is unfounded.
Prof. Sparks has obtained one year’s leave of absence. He
will spend the time at Johns Hopkins University and at the Uni
versity of Chicago.
Ex-’96. C. W. Ritter is travelling salesman for a Philadelphia
paint firm.
’9O. The engagement of Mr. Philip G. Gossler, formerly of
Columbia, but now of New York city, to Miss Mary Claflin, of
Brooklyn, is announced. She is niece of H. B. Claflin, the head
of the importing firm of H. B. Claflin & Co.
Mr. Gossler was recently appointed assistant superintendent of
an immense electric light and power plant in Montreal, Canada,
where he will shortly go to assume the duties of his new and re-
