Mr. Chas. Eaches has recently added a number
of rare and valuable specimens to his fine collec
tion of minerals and fossils.
The debate between the representatives of the
Cresson and Washington Literary societies will
take place in the chapel, May 20th.
F. Mattern, ’94, will manage the base ball nine
for the remainder of the season, J. F. Shields
havingresigned, owing to pressure of college work.
A change in the college charter has recently
been made by the legislature fixing the com
mencement week the second week in June instead
of the first week in July.
The track around the athletic ground which
was being constructed under the directions of our
physical trainer, Mr. Hoskins, is completed, and
is one of the finest in the State.
Entrance examinations will be held here June
16th. During the same week local examinations
for entrance to college will be .held in Pittsburg,
Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Scranton.
R. B. Mattern, ’93 attended the convention of
the college Y. M. C. A. presidents of western
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, which
was held in Lancaster, April 28 to May 1.
“Chlorate," a three-act tradegy by Will Shakes
peare which was given in the Cresson Hall by the
Cressonities, April 22, made a decided hit.
“Chlorate’s” moonlight scene was especially ef
fective. A large and appreciative audience was
present.
THE FREE LANCE.
The work on the Engineering building is pro
gressing very rapidly. The lining of the interior
of the basement with brick is almost completed,
and the first layer ofbrownstone is being laid.
The Bellefonte C. R. R. manager’s have pur
chased a wooded tract about half way between the
College and Bellefonte which they expect to con
vert into a park The park is to contain a drive
way, athletic grounds.
The meeting of the State Inter-collegiate Ath
letic Association which was to have been held
in Philadelphia, May 21st, has been postponed
until June 4th. This will cause a change to be
made, in the plans of the athletic team.
Mr. W. L. Foster, a State College merchant,
has signified his intention of presenting a silver
cup to the athletic association to be awarded to
the best tackier on the college foot-ball team of
the season of’92 and ’93.
On Thursday, April 28th, the Engineering
section of the Junior class, accompanied by
Prof. Jackson, went to Bellefonte to inspect
the iron furnaces in connection with their work
in the materials of construction.
The interest taken in foot-ball at P. S. C. lives
throughout the year. At present the candidates
for next season’s team are practicing in the even
ings on the athletic grounds. Our prospects for
a good team next season are very bright.
The first Rhetorical Exhibition of the . spring
term was held in the chapel, April 27th. The
speakers were Girvin and Greenwood, ’93,
Kremer, Mattern, F. and Rebuhn, ’94, Marshall,
Morgan, Robinson, Rodgers, Seibert and Wood
ring, ’95.
Mr. Olds has just completed the plans for an
athletic house which has so long been needed. It is
to be built at thenorthern extremity of the athletic
grounds and will be 15x22. Besides a room 13X
14 withseats it will contain lockers, closets, and a
shower bath. The water for the bath will be
brought from the Experimental Station.
