On Saturday afternoon, April sth, the new
gymnasium was informally opened. The an
nouncement of the fact was hailed with en
thusiasm by every one as we have been
waiting long for the event. During the after
noon throngs of students were to be seen
wending their way to the armory and all were
pleased with the fine apparatus. NoW that
we have a "gym" we hope to make a better
showing in athletics than previously. Hither
to we have been greatly handicapped in train
ing and our teams have been at a great disad
vantage. But now that time has passed and

was consummated on the night of the iBth of
April. Under cover of the intense darkness

recently in the vicinity, contrived by forcible
means to enter the provision department of
the ladies' cottage. In this treasure vault
there was resting in supposed security one of
the triumphs of the art of the professoress of
D. E. It was a cake. The villains immedi
ately determined to purloin this luscious look
ing hunk of sweetness. But alas when two.
of the thieves attempted to pass the feathery
crumb out of the window to an accomplice ;
the latter gent (?) was unable to carry it and
so it dropped to the ground with a dull thud.
Oh, how heavy it was, and yet it was not
large. There was but one way of removing
it, and so a mule and a cart and a large axe
were procured, the dainty morsel was hacked
into . pieces of convenient weight, and these
were carted away one by one to the rendes
vouz. The effect of the terrible night's work
was very telling on the robbers, both out
wardly and inwardly, and nothing was seen
of them for several clays, To the lady inmates
the burglary was certainly fortunate, for by it
a narrow escape was made frorri an awful tor
ture, prepared by the " aussorities " of the
house.
Prof. in Physiology—" Miss S—, what are
the carbohydrates ?"
Miss S—" Starch, grape sugar, milk sugar."
Sleepy intercepting, " Milk shake,"
Lieutenant, in tactics—" Gentlemen, I wish
to criticise the way you sit in the classroom.
At West Point a cadet would be compelled to
work for an entire Saturday, if he lounged in
class the way you do."
Count Gibbs—" Lieutenant, may be they
have better seats than these."
Wallenstein—" Lieutenant, may be they
wear cavalry pants."
