deal with the social problems of to-day with
advantage ? Who are our great commercial
men ? Who spans our rivers and continents ?
Who brings our mechanism to perfection ?
The answer comes rolling back, gaining force
with each revolution, it is those who lead all
men—the learned.
Thus it is evident that the student of to
day will sway the sceptre of power and
genius in the near future. If then the
students of to-day are to become the leaders
of to-morrow, how carefully they should be
trained, more carefully than were the con
testants in the Olympian games ; much more
depends on them. The fate of nations is at
stake ! All that is noble, pure and endur
ing is dependent upon the leaders of the
future. We do not claim all for learning;
much more is born of virtue. Neither do we
urge that learning will create virtue ; but
whatever is in a man higher education will
develop it ; if he be a fool, it will enable him
to show his foolishness; if a knave, it will
enable him to be more knavish ; but if he
has the elements of true manhood within,
higher education will serve to bind those
elements into one harmonious and resplen
dent personage, well worthy of being a leader
among men
Hence it is true that the more of wisdom
gained and the wider it is diffused, the more
probable it is that the greatest leaders will be
developed. And it follows, in order to per
form our duty to God and to man, we must put
forth our best efforts to gain learning, ever
letting our sentiments be those expressed by
Tennyson :
" Let knowledge grow from more to more,
But more of reverence in us dwell,
That mind and soul according well •
May make one music as before,"
But vast,
We draw from what has been said that
learning is not the only factor in the creating
of a leader, but it is by far the most import
ant and the most powerful.

Sat by a gurgling spring.
