LETTER BOX, ursinus college, collegeville, pa,, Sep tember 20th, 1889. To the Editors of “ The Free Lance Ursinus has entered upon the 20th year of its history better equipped for work than ever before. During the summer vacation, the ex terior of the college buildings was entirely renewed, giving them as bright and attractive an appearance as if just erected. Several recitation rooms and many of the private apartments of the students have also been re fitted. The Fall session opened September 3rd with a large attendance of the old students and about forty additions in the different de partments. The new professors of the col lege will thus begin their work under most auspicious circumstances. Prof. Stibitz, who comes from Yale with splendid credentials and the degree of Ph. D., will take the chair of the Latin language and Literature, (lately vacated by Professor Hyde to accept a call to Lehigh University,) and will also teach Hebrew. The department of Music has received a valuable accession in the person of Professor Michael J. Kegrize, a graduate of the Leipsig Conservatory and a pupil of Carl Reinecke. The highly gratifying financial results at tained during 1888-89 may again be equalled this year, if not indeed surpassed, should the happy prospects in this direction continue. During the very first few days of the new term, the treasurer was most agreeably sur prised by receiving notice of the endowment of two additional scholarships of $lOOO each by friends of the college, and other substantial evidences of the esteem in which the institu tion is held continue to abound on all sides. The work of what thus promises to be the best year of the college is at this writing well under way, and the preparations for the num erous customary events of the term, including the anniversaries of the Schaff and Ebrard Literary Societies, are actively in progress.
