The Farmers' DepftHment. - " 4 " The Poor Farmer. We saw the other day io one of our exchanges, a little para graph .with "thU heading, in which it was justly paid that a '.'poor farmer cannot con ceal the fact that be "is a poor farmer' Nothing can be truer. His work lies bc lore the world. Every passer can look upon it 'and recjrd his judgment There are his house, hij barn, his out-buildings, his implements, hid horses and cat'le. If he is a poor farmer it will be seen in all v.,. li So vprv house-card and barn- IUC3V. - ' J J vard sr-cak of his want of industry anJ thrift, in clear language Yel there is no one more difficult to instruct or re'orui than the man who is determined to puue his own wretched course, in the face of all his neighbors and the wW.e communi ty. And there are two reasons for it. First, ho loves the rum bottle ; and if not this, then he is Daturally lnzy and a poor devil generally. In citt.er case he has no future to live and work for ; no pride or self-respect. If he is spoken to on the subject, he replies that he thinks his mode of managing his farm the best ; he was a farmer bred, his father a farmer before him; and he has nothing to learn from the jimcrack course of modern days, by .which, though tho land may yield more, the cost in making it do so is far more ti.n w hp losrs As to his implements, when they are worn out, he may think -v., no- Athprs. hut sees no use in 1UUVI 1 hrnwin? tools awav that acswer -nV An to his house and garden, .v emp his father had. and if IUSI uiw - tofa rrntA Cnlin f n for hie father, what right had be to complain ? He has little to send to market, and that a kind neighbor takes and tells for him. Ask him why he does not raise more for marketing, aod he replies that it does not pav ; the time and expense con sumed in going to market, the wear and tear of horses and wagons, come to more ; than what can be made out of it. He has reckoned it out and knows. If asked why he does not substitute a different variety of corn, oats, or other gram, lor that Irom which he derives only half a crop, he re plies that he gets along well enough with what he has, and it is adapted to his land, while new sorts may not be. ... Everything is managed or mismanaged in the same way. Look at the broken helvings of his hay wagon j his cart with a wooden linch-pin iu one of the axles ; the whecl-barrow with one leg ; the roller, plows and harrows exposed all the year Tonnd to the weather, and some of them still lying where they were last used ; the gears tied up with twioe; me Darn-aru fence broken and tho catt!e roaming through th6 meadows and tearing to pieces his aouple ot poor hay-stacks; the hogs rooting up the orchard and eating up the roots of the remaining gra?s; the fence in irontof the house blown over by the wind three or four months ago and still lying -there; the approach to the house thick with mud ; coal-ashes, flat-stones or boards ar to be seen. .Eiveryttung indeed is la keeping, and however unpleasing and even painful i'. may be to others, aod however impossible it may seem to others that the 'poor farmer cannot but see it and deplore ; tnn thmitrh helnless to improve, it is not so. lie does not 6ce it. He will not know it. He likes it as it is ! . : Mixed Stock, in Pasture. I no ticed, some time ago, a good deal written about keeping a mixed stuck in pasture. As I have been a keeper of stock from early youzh until now, I venture to give my opinion. And first, I have found that sheep do very well amongst cattle, but cat tie do badly amongst 6heej.. To prove it. let the farmer take the fodder left by the attle, even when part of it has been trod den under their feet, and if the sheep are not fully fed, they will Fee the sheep eat it uovcry greedily; and then let him take what his sheep leave atd offer it to his cattle, aod he will find they won't taste it ;f ihev ran fet auYthinjz rise : or let him turn his milch cows into a fheep pasture, and he will find them to fail in milk. Cattle do verv well where horses pas- mm j ml tare. In proot ot this, every iarmer must v.ro .cn that cattle will eat the litter of horses, even if fully fed, but horses wou't eat what cattle leave, unles compelled to do so. Rut horses and sheep will do well in the same pasture, especially the horses. To prove this, let the farmer turn out the sheep from their yard and turn in his horses, and they will eat all the sheep have left, even the litter around the racks. rjaEALLEGIIANIANJOROFFICE HEW TYPE !
