once was as great as it was possible lor
any iuau's to be; during the last fourteen
years ot that period I was steward lor a
nobleman who bad three largo landed es
tates, about 100 miles apart, besides sev
eral smaller ones containing about as
many hundred acres as the larger one
did thousands. One fourth at leas; of the
whole ot this landed property wai iu per
manent grass, which had remained unbro
ken sward for scores of jcar, and some of
it for hundrds of years; uoue ot this
grass land had deteriorated, tut most of it
was much improved, to that having the
larming of many handled of it, and the
superintendence of thousand, rented to
opulent tenants, 1 ought to know otne
tLing of grass land; and here I might as
well say that ruauy of my remarks are
meant to apply to old permaneut grass
land composed of natural varieties, and not
to clover or timothy, which make naught
but temporary gra6?, and will run out.
But I am not to be iaad to believe
that it is good for the hay, when made
from clover, to be turning to seed, much
more have some seed quite ripe at the ex
pense of the stems and leaves; who wnts
. beed for cattle? Nor can any one convince
me that the whole landed proprietors in
England are fools, which they must be if
the statement above will apply generally,
for every lease in that country expresses
that clover shall not bo allowed to seed,
excepting, in small quantites, because of
its exhaustive effects. Since being in
this cuuntry I fed hay cut when in bloom
to working oxen, horses, and somo hun
dreds of sheep; it so happeued that a late
spriog, and being overstocked, rendered
it necessary to buy from a neighbor who
cut his hay late, and the uonscqucuce was
the whole of the animals had to have
rxtra meal and grain, and then the horses
lost flesh, and oxen suffered worse, and the
6heep sank shillings per head, and the
wes half starved their lambs. Common
sense will tell any one that hay is hay,
but 6traw is a different article, and pray
what is any stemmy substance which has
matured seed, but straw?.

Medicinal Proi'ekties of Celery.
A corespondent of the 1'ractical Farmer
writes: 1 havo known many men and
women too, who, from various causes had
become bo much affected with nervous
ness that when they streiohed out their
hand they shook like aspen leaves on
windy days una by a daily moderate use
of the blanched loot stalks of celery
leaves as a salad they became as strong
and steady in limb3 as other people.
I have known others so very nervous
that the, least annoyance put them in a
state of agitation, and they were almost in
constant perplexity and fear, who were al
so effectually cured by a daily moderate
use of blanched celery as a salad at meal
times. I havo known others cured by
using celery for palpitation of the heart.
Everybody engaged in labor weakening to
the nerves, should use celery daily in sea
son, aud onions, in iL stead when not in
season.
Fine Mead. Beat to a ' strong froth
the whites of three eggs, and mix them
trith six gallons of water; six quarts ol
drained honey, and the yellow rindof'two
dozen fine lemons, pared very thin. Boil
all together during threo quarters ot an
hour, skimming it well. Then put into a
tub; and when lukewarm add three table
epoonfuls of the best fresh yeast. Cover
it over and leave it to ferment. "When
it has done working transfer it to a cask,
with the lemon peel in the bottom.- Let
it stand six hours, then bottle it
