Manures. The failure to raise good
crop i of wheat upon laDd loDg cultivated
is ool bo often attributable to different seed
as unfair cultivation. In most cases the
noil has keen robbed of the wheat produc-
" tog properties, such as the phophates,
potash and o'her suits. This is true in a
large degree of the wheat growing section
uf the older States, where the soil has been
so lone drained of its substance that it is
no longer possible to raise a heavy crop of
Wheat in the best season. (Ja such lands
farmers phould apply bone dust, or soluble
bone dust, or bout super-phosphate and
ashes to restore the potash. Lime should
' be nsed to gather carbonic acid. Li m de
posited in large piles will collect carbonic
acid from the air and become a better fer
tilizer. Lime should be applied with
grass or other rentable matter, upon
which it acts chemically and produces
plant food. It also corrects the 90urs
acid in llie soil. Some fields need sul
phuric acid which is supplied bj sowing
plaster.
Sown npon clover, plaifer causes it to
drw to it the ammonia from the air nud
water, and if the tflover be plowed down
when in fnll bloom and quick lime be used
the clorer is converted into plant food.
The best fertilizer in the experience of
the writer is a compost of uiuck,bain-jard
manure and clay, thoroughly decomposed
and mixed with equal parts of lime, ashes,
aa!t, plaster, acd bono phosphate. No soil
except a virgin soil will fail to produce
wheat with this compound. It should be
thoroughly mixed and tcreoued,so that it
can be drilled in with the wheat. It
should bo nsed in tho Fall, when the
rain helps to decompose it nd to enrich
unwinding soil, and when tiie grain
roos are ready to take up the parts most
needed for food fur the wheat plant.
Plant roots do not permeate manures and
take them up until they are decomposed
by the action of the moisture, and in times
of great drought manure yield very little
nourishment. When the moisture pene
trates the soil the roots of plants search
for nourishment, and if the soil be loose
they can penetrate the particles and
gather it.
Vegetable manures contain t very small
proportion of palm, and these must bo
supplied if the farmer wishes to enrich
the soil aud raise large crops of grain.

Corn Fob Fodder. At the North,
corn may bo sown for fodder at any time,
from the usual corn-planting season
until tho middle or end of June, the only
requirement being to allow time for the
fodder to mature sufficiently, which is usu
ally indicated by the edges of the leaves
beginning to become dry. Northern
corn mieht doubtless be sown in North
Carolina as late as August, but the larger
Southern sorts which grow longer, should
be sown earlier. If the soil is drv, it
mult be planted deeper. We have been
in the practice of sowing it for fodder for
more than twenty years, and find no mode
better than to plow and harrow the ground,
furrow it out three or four feet apart,
strew the corn along the furrows by hand
Jrom a baket, at the rate of three bush
els per acre, and harrow it in. It is after
wards cultivated two or three times by
horse. Cut with a scythe or corn-cutter,
bind, and set up in large even shocks, and
allow it either" to remain till wanted, or
els stack in small stacks, with three rails
et upright in the middle, half a foot or
xaora apart, to make a chimney for the
escape of the hot air of fermentation.
Stacked in the common way, it will heat
and spoil. It is ono of tho best substi
tutes for hay, and is much sheaper than
hay at $10 per ton.
To Make Cows Give Milk. A
writer says: If you desire to get a large
yield of rich milk, give your cow, three
times a day, water slightly warm, slightly
salted, in which bran. has been stirred at
the rate of one quart to two gallons of
water. You will find, if youhavo not
tried this daily practice, that your cow
will give twenty-five per cent more im
mediately under the effect of it, end she
wiU become so attached to the diet as to
refuse to driok clear water, unless very
thirsty; but this mess she will drink al
most any time, and 'ask for more.' The
