FEEnr.NO Whole Chain to Cattls.
, j It is ao exper.Mvc Fyste-ui of manage
ment to feed whole grain to any kind of
animal. All kinds of cereal gruu arc
provided with a tough hull or f km, which
ihe digestive powers of mott animals will
not difolve; consequently, if the skin i
not brokf-n before ihcgraiu enters the tow
ch, the kernala will usually pass off wMi
the droppiutts without i, Hording the ar.i
init. that swall vwed the grain, any more
nourishment than fraguisnta of weed cf
During the month of August las!, the wri-
ter procured a quantity ei horee niunure lor
top-dresii:g strawberry j hints, and in a few
. days after the n:ti!ch was pjread around
the plants the broken kerna!,s of oafs vege
tated, to that the. entire surface of the
ground appeared as recu as a U'D.
This factsoowed conclusively thai much
ol the rain had never afforded, the animals
ba Bwadowed it any nourighmen' ai all.
Young hordes having sound Htul sharp
treth will sometimes cruh every kernal.
But old horses with poor teeth .riSI Irtquent
ly swallow half their mexs of oa;s without
breaking the skin of the kernali.
When j;ills are nt a distance and people
will jrris in fti ding whole :rain, it will
' always be found advantaira'iu t soak the
grain at lcabt twci.ty four Lours lefore
feeding it.
Suppose, for example, a teamster is ac
customed to feed a team fight quarts of In
dian corn and oats, at each leeding, Fay
three times a day. Let the grain be put
in a Pj1 and covered with warm water
every titua thy team u leu. inn jiau
would rcjuiie three paiU when a team is
fed three times daily. Warm water, is far
better than cold water, as cold water, in
cold weather, will sotten the grain but little.
Teamsters may rest assured that it will pay
well for all trouble to eoak grain before
feeding it.
mm
Potatoes Seed Required for an
Acre. The general rule laid down by
firmeraito allow ten bushels to aa acre.
This is very indefinite. The amount if
eed required for an aero depends on the
mode ol plauting (wheather in biiU or
drill, with cut or whole potatoes,) the
kind of 3ced used, and the nature ot the
soil.
.Every man of my acquaintance who at
tempted, this year to plant an acre with
cut seed in drills, using ten bushels, fell
short from cue-third to one-half. If you
plant in hills, time ltd apart each way,
you will have 4,840 hills to the acre.
One medium siz'd potato in each hill, ac
cording to Mr. IIarricou's plan, would re
quire about 20 bushels. The averaged
imniber, of mediuai-sizeJ potatoes in a
bushel being about 240. If you plant in
rows, three toet aput, and place your sets
twelve iuehes apart in the rows, you re
quire 14,520 sets, By measuring a peck
or a bushel of the average size of jour po
tatoes, and counting them, you can scon
calculate the number of bushels you re
quire. Unless xarh hill jieM us much as three
tlalkt in a row, it would be k.-s profitable
to cultivate in hills than by drill.
- J ust weigh two or five pound of seed for
each method, and make the experiment
next season, for yourself. Acurutc experi
ment is required, in order to fcuccessiui
lanning.
One barrel Early Rose cut to single eye.
will make about 1400 ryes, and will plant
an acre that will produce ouc hundred
bushels worth five dollars per bushel, or
500, next season. Cost ot potatoes and
cultivation, one hundred do'.ljrs; leaving
a net profit of four hundred dollars per
acre.
. Rolling Grain in the String. If
fuimers would look at the theory ot rolling
the wheat and rye Gt Ma in the opting, sfth
the Germantowii Tebyraph, it would be
retorted to much more frequently than it
i. Occasionally the wiiUr and spring
have been so tavorable to thee crops as
not to ici.der it necessary. But in three
tcasous out of four it is iccessary, and
doubtless adds c-nsidti alio tj their pro
ductiveness. The thawing and the freez
ings of the ground, throwing or fpewiug
out the root and exposing them to thedry
ing winds of February and March, very
sariuu-ly affect the pain, l'a.sii.g a rol
ler over as aoou es the soil is fit to enter
up in, pre sses back i he r.ots into their beds,
and gives them a fair grip again upon the
support ou whtc'i the crop must oepeud.
This must be apparent to every oue who
will look at its operation. We have m
doubt that rolling clover fields that have
been bad!y thrown up by the frott, would
also bavo a most beruficial effect.
. A writer in the Hearth and Home Fay?
Hut according to the best analyses and
practical experiments, 400 pouncs ol beets
ate equivalent. to 100, pounds of ttc best
English hay, t $25 per ton.
A Maine farmer fattened a cow cVtefiy
on turnips, end the result surpassed ex
pectation. The beef was of fine quality,
and the tallow unusually abundant.
