    Tbe Farmers' Department.
Early or Late Planting of Corn.
I believe that ly eaily planting, say
from the 4th to the 10th of May, the
farmer is niore certain of a good crop.
I will admit that late planting will some
times hrie as cood a crop as that which
vasplar.ted earlier, but to do so it requires
a very favorable season. I have known a
good crop raised from seed planted as late
ua the 5th of June, but the season vras
very favorable, Mid the corn received no
'backsets," nnd had nothing to do but
crow. It seems that aittr the plant has
reached a certain f-tajie it is not material
ly injured by dry weather. All practical
Mariners ki.ow that if the ears are not well
filled in August there will not be a large
S
crop; alter this the corn will harden but
will i:ot increase in quantity or size.
Although as a general thing early plant
ing is the best, yet on wet soils there will
be little or nothing gained by it. It has
wlxavs been my plan to plant early, nod
drop un extra grain in each hill. The
number of grains required must depend
on the care taken in ihe selection of the
seed. I drop f iur in a hill, and never
have occasion to replant. This I atributc
to the care taken in the selection of seed.
This is an item which soie, even of our
best farmer?, are tfiO careless about.
The plan which I pursue is as follows:
"While cutting the corn, all the best and
largest ears ore left standing that they
may get fully ripe. I always choose
twice as much as I erpect to use; when
the corn is gathered the seed cars are huak
cd and placed on the slats over the kitch
en, where they remain till spring. Just
imaediatey beioie planting time they
are sorted over, aDd tho?e having the
smallest cobs, iu proportion to the length
or depth of the grain, are selected for
teed. The next operation is to shell three
inches from the point and one at the but,
and use the remainder for 6eed.
This may seem to be too much trouble,
but rest assured "it will pav," and that
Well.
Another great mistake is to have too
many stalks in a hill. On strong ground
three and four stalka will produce more
orn than five.
I have proved by actual experiment
that the corn raided from seed taken from
the middle of the ear will ripen from two
to three weeks sooner than thai taken
from either end !
Building Vorm Fences. I saw a
piece in The Alieyhanian a few weeks ago,
in which the writer gave a plan for uia-
kins
a worm fence.
I cannot asree with him in reference to
his plan being the best one that character
ires fence making. I will give my plan,
by which I have worked for more than
twenty-five years, and nevtr knew it to
fail.
I give it free of charge, and it may le
that some one will be benefited by it.
. Set one row of stakes firm and straight
iu a line, where the fence is to . be built.
Make a movable stake about six feet
loDg, aud about twoiocV.es in diameter:
bore an inch hole through it, two feet
from the bottom; put a pin into it two
feet and three inches long. Let this stake
be put in range with those stake previous
ly set, and with the pin pointing toward
the rijiht hand, (or the left, as the builder
desires;) then commence laying the bot
tom rail, by making the corner just im
mediately under the end of the pin.
Then set the movable stake forward to
where the other corner i3 to be in range
with the other stakes, with the pin point
ing toward the opposite side, making the
corner immediately at the ct.d of the pin ;
and then set the stake forward
again,
with the pin to the other side, and so on
throughout the entire length of the fence.
This method will greatly facilitate the
making of a SDUg and straight fence, which
is one cf the characteristic points in farm
ing. Isaac Gates,
Reaver Valley, Pa.
In twenty-four State pris- oh in the
United States there were in 18C7 an ag
gregate of 10,835 prisoners. These cost
the. States the round sum of S1,5GG.9S2,
pnd their earnings amounted to 1,092,-
0S0. The. average cost, per head, of theso
pri-oners was 177 a year, while their
average earnings were 123 ahead. The
rnost economically managed prisons in the
United States were those of Connecticut
nnd Ohio, wherthe average was less than
100 a head. If all tho prisons had been
managed as ecoroiuically, they weuld have
yielded a net ir. fit of over 6100,000 to
the State. More than one-fifth of al
the prisoners in these State prisons were
minora. 1 ronaoly three-fourths ol all the
criminah in these prisons were more cr
