TIio Farmers' Department f .Salt as an Article or Dibt for. Stock. It would saem absurd to argue that rait is an essential ingredient in, or in .connection with, the' feed of lire-stock. The problem is one "which has its demon stration daily in the fonduess of animals for it, in their rouh coats, aud nibbling and sniffing appetites when deprived of it, sod in the sleek condition and sharp ap petites which soon oomc from its moder ate UJe. The deer and the bufialo are n -fond of salt as our domestic ruminants, and in a condition of captivity, it is as es sential to their health. Catilc i-ear the sea-hoard do not need salt, and jliouzh .they like it, the n?e of it is often given up. because its benefits are not apparent, and the very knowledge of its utility may be lost in a few generation. "flow quickly your butter comes !" said an acquaintance who had stepped in 10 have a wom'to;; chat with the good wife of a farmer living near one of our seaside watering-places. "Yoa must fait your cows well." "No, no, we never salt them ; do you fcalt your cows?" "Certainly, every week." "How do you do it V Rub it into their backs V was the innocent, and, from her standpoint, natural rejoinder. When cattle and sheep are salted once & week and flat rocks with basins in them are not a bundant, the next best things are Hi tie ouk "dugouts," three feet long, ieo' inches wide, four high, and about two deep. They will last out in the weather a long time if they are only housed in the winter, or turned bottom upwards on a rock. A swinging roof hung in a frame, which supports the trough a little above the ground, protects the salt from the : weather, and animals will quickly learn to push the roof to one side and get at the salt, and when they leave, the roof swings back again. Rock-salt ia lumps of sever al pounds weight is the best article for ' placiog in troughs or mangers. Thisco?t a good deal more than the salt from the "same mines, dissolved, evaporated, puri- . fied, and furnished in sacks, as "Ashton's Factory-filled," simply because there is not demand enough for it to make it an article of extensive commerce. It is so " hard that onimali cannot gnaw it easily, and in simply licking it they do not get too much, but quite enough. Blanketing Horses. It is not un usual for over-kind and very careful peo ple, in very cold weather, to put on a heavy blauket under the harness of their horses when about to drive to town or to church. This practice, although intended as a hu mane one, is by no means to be recommend ed. While the horse is performing his work, there is no danger that ho will suffer from the severest cold, or that his natural clothing will not be enough. In deed, unless his work is very slow, perspi ration will be excited, and the moisture thus arising would to retained by the , blanket, instead of being immediately dis . sipated into the air. The consequence is, that, the moment we stop, our horse stands in the cold winds, with a wet blanket over his whole body, the effect of the evapora tion of the water being to make him much colder than he would be if the blanket cwere then taken off. The true plan is, in cold weather, never to blanket a horse while he is taking exercise ; and never to allow him to stand a moment without blanketing with a dry blanket, when his exercisa hs ceased. So true is this, that the most careful and experienced owners 'and drivers of fine horses find it advan tageous to remove even the heavy coating of hair that uature supplies for winter season, so that there may be no accumu lation of moisture about the skin in con sequence of heating work j aud to supply its place, at all times, when the animal is at re?t, by ample clothing. - . , m m m Onions for Poultry. It seems -strange that this esculent is so little ap preciated, not only for use by the human family, but for poultry. Its curative prop erties do not seem to be understood, or else are much underrated. And as a pre ventive it has no superior. A few raw onions chopped up fine and mixed with the feed of your chickens acts like a tonio and is equally good for old fowls. 'J ho tops are good. We remember, long, long years ago, seeing an old maiden aunt chop ping up onion tops and chives for the vouner turkeys, deeming it a certain speci- fio against the gapes, pip or other ills that fowl iom is heir to. Ihree times a week i not too often to give them a taste not merely a taste but a good bite also. Were the use of green food more common among 'poultry raisers, we should hear cf less eases of cholera, roup, gapes, & 3. If same ness in food will engender distateand dis ease in man, why not in fowls? Feed your fowls as you do yourself. Give them change, variety; and gtro them onions.
