Smith' Ale. In tnc town of G
there lived a very humorous fellow by tho
name of Joe Miller. There were but few
persons, young or old, in the , little town,
who were not at some time Joe's victims.
J oe was a frequent visitor at the only inn
in the place, and was well known by all
the customers. It happened that, as bus
iness was pressing, the landlord determined,
to hire a bar-keeper, and accordingly the
next day found a new man serving the cus
tomers at -the-inn. . :
. When- J oe arrived- for bi usual cock
tail be; eyed the new bar-keeper very close-:
ly for a few moments, evidently to satisfy
himself that he'd never seen, him before,
and stalking up to the counter, he demand
ed a glass of ale. The new man immedi
ately set it before him. Joe swallowed it
at a draught, and after wiping his mus
tache, asked the bar-keeper,
" Whose ale was that?"
"Smith's," promptly replied the giu ven
dor. "Very good ale," said Joe. '-Belaud,
enough to hand another."
I He got another and punished it a tho
iaforementioned.
- Whoso ale did you say that was?" re-
Eeated Joe, this time more serious than
efore. , . : . - . . t.
"Smith's," replied the bar-keeper, aston
ished at the earnestness of Joe.
"Oh yes, just tell Mr. Smith that I
called and got a couple glasses of his ale ;
hes a brother-in-law of mine. Good-dav."
And Joe walked leisurely out of the bar--
room, leaving the astonished and Dertified
B. K. to come to what conclusion he
might concerning Smith and his brother-
in-law.
Learn a Trade. Tiere appears to bo
a great dearth, just now, of good mechanics
and workmen, while there Beeins.to be, at
the same time, a corresponding demand-by
young men lor situations as cleTks, bar
tenders, &c., where they can eke a suste
nance without the necessity of'working for
it. Now, this should not be so7rfor all
the wealth of the nation is produced by
the hands and skill of the laborer, mechan
ic and artizan, while those in search of
sinecure positions are little less than excres-,
cenccs on society.
- Every young. man who has two-hand-and
an ordinary amount of brains, can, by
proper application, become not only a re
spectable mechanic, but a useful and intel
ligent citizen while not one in a dozen can
attain any proficiency in any profession, or
make a figure in the lighter capacity of

clerk, &c. This being so, young men, as
a general thing, when setting out in the
world, should prefer a "situation" as an ap
prentice to some good trade, to wanting a
clerkship, or to engage in some profession

or which he is neither by nature nor edu
cation in any manner fitted. - ' :
It is only necessary for any yonng. man
to look among the real substantial men of
our day, or read the history of those of
past ages, to convince him ot the truth of
our remarks: and we earnestly ask every '
voim? man who "wants a situation." to ero
and learn a trade, and be master ot nis cal
ling, before he throws himself away on

door one day after service, that he intended

he set the example by tossing five dollars:

"That's nine and a quarter." "Ten and

and Christian brethren'Slowly ic mounted
up. "Twelve and a half." "Fourteen."
"Fifteen." "Sixteen and three bits," and
so on until it stuck at nineteen dollars and
fifty cents. "It only wants fifty cents,
friends, to make it up I" Everybody had
subscribed, and not a cent more was forth
coming. Silence reigned, and how long it
might have lasted it was difficult to say,
had not a half dollar been tossed through
the open windoWj and a rough explanatory
voice shouted i "Here, parson, there's your
money, let out my gal, I'm about tired of
waitin' for her."
