    Ulouut Vernon.
If all the rumors about the management
of the Mount Vernon Association be cor
rect, the design of purchasing the es-tate
and tomb of the "Father of II Country"
has heen terribly warped. Instead of its
being a shrino which patriotic pilgrims
inaj visit with pride, it is a place whish
engenders sadness because of neglect, aud
which mortifies the heart, because it is
controlled by those who revere Dot the
country or its founder. The Commercial
Bulb-tin says :
"We learn that a family of eight South
ern persons occupy the nian?ioo, living in
ease and comfort, and admitting visitors
to a view of only three of the many rooms
in the mansion; that officers and soldiers
of the United States urmy are forblddcu
to enter the grounds except upon payment
s
of a fee, while Ore compar.ies aud picnic
parties from Alexandria and other couth
cm towns are readily admitted without
charge.
"These are facts. If they can be ex
plained, well and good ; if they cannot, an
investigation should be made in the inter
est of the whele country. The public
would like to know how this family of
eight ladies is comfortably supported in
the home of (Jeorgc Washington ; by what
right they shut out vL-itors Irom all but
three rooms of the house; what becouies
of the ha'f dollar fees paid by visitors
whether they ultimately find their way
into the tills of the family grocer and
butcher, cr are carefully added to the
funds of the Mount Vernon Association.
''There can, of course, be no reasonable
objection to the residence, at 3Iount Ver
non, if two or three agents of tho associa
tion, as custodians of the property. They
may bo Southerners or Northerners, for
aught we care. But if tLc loyal people of
the c;antry who go on a patriotic pilgrim
age to the tomb of our first President, are
to be taxed fjr the support of a dozen
idle, penniless representatives of a decay
ed 'first family,' it is right that visitors
should know it."
