! j Tlio Farmers' Dcpaflment. How a Farmer may Lose Money. By not taking a good liooie paper. Keeping do account of home opera tion". Paving no attent on to t! e maxim, in. t 'A stitch in time saves nine," in regard to trie sowing of grain and planting of seed at the proper season. Leaving reapers, plwe, cultivator, etc, uncovered from the rain and heat of the sun. More money is lost in this way than ti i t r most people are wining -o Deneve. Permitting broken implements to be scattered over the frm until they are ir reparable. By repairing broken imple ment at the proper time many dollars may be saved, a proof of the assertion that "lime is money.' Attending the auctions and purchasing all kinds of trumpery, because, in the words of the vender, the articles are "very cheap." Allowing fences to remain unre paired until strange cattle are found graz ing in the meadow, grain fields, or bruis ing the fruit trees. Disbelieving the principle of a rotation cf crops before making a single experi ment. Plantinz froit trees with the expecta tion of having fruit ; without g'mng the trees half the attention required to make them profitable. Fracticing economy by depriving stock of proper snelter auring winter, ana giv ing them unsound food, such as half rot ten and mouldy hav and fodder. Keeping an innumerable tribe of rats on the premise?, and two or three lazy dogs that eat up more in a month than they are worth in whole a life time. Average Age of Animals. -The average age of cats is 15 years ; of squirrels and hares, 7 or 8 years; pf rabbits, 7; a bear rarely exceeds 20 years j a wolf, 20; a fox, il to 10; lions are long lived, the one known by the name of Pompey liviog to fie age ct 70 years; elephants have been known, it is asserted, to live to the great age of 400 years. "When Alexander the Great conquered Porus, King of InJia, he took a great elephant which had fought very valiantly for the King, and named him Ajax, dedicated him to the sua, and let him go with this inscription : "Alex ander, the son of Jupiter, dedicated Ajax to the Pun." The elephant was found with thi inscription 350 years after. Pigs have been known to live to the age of 20, and tho rhinoceros to 20; a horse has been konwn to live to the age of G2, but averages 25 to 30, caiueU sometimes hvo to the age ot 100 ; stags are very long lived ; sheep seldom exceed the age of 10; cows live about 15 years, and are then kil led for beef. Cuvier considers it proba ble that whales sometimes live 1,000 years; the dolphin and porpoise attain the age of SO; an eagle died at Yienoa at the age of 104; ravens frequently reach the age of 130; swans have been known to live 300 years. Mr. Malerton has the skeleton of a ?wan that attained the age of 200 years. Pelicans are long lived. A tortoise has been known to live 107 ytar3. Making Saurkraut. As several la dies within the past two weeks Lave desir ed us to republish our recipe for making this much esteemed dish hy many persons, we herewith comply with their request, in order that it may be in time for this years crop of cabbages. It is this: In the first place let your "stand," holding from a half barrel to a barrel, be thor oughly scalded out; the cutter, the tub and the stamper also well scalded. Take off all the outer leaves l the cabbage, halve them, remove the heart, and pro ceed with the cutting. Lay some clean Jeaves at the bottom of the stand, sprink le with a handful of salt, fill in a half bushel of the cut cabbage, stamp gently until the juice begins to make its appear ance, then add another handful of salt, and so on until the stand is full. Cover over with cabbtge leave?; place on top a clean board fitting the spac? prettj vrell, and on the top of that a stone weighing twelve or fittceu pounds. Stand away in a cool place, and when hard freezing cornea on remove to the cellar. It will be ready for use in from four to b'ix weeks. The cabbage should be cut tolerably coarse. The Eavoy variety makes the best article, but it is only half as productive as the Drumhead aud Flat Dutch. German totcn Telegraph. , Farming as a Calling. A writer in the Boston Cultivator, in speaking of the nobility ol farming, and after quoting Adam as a farmer, goes on justly to say : "The long line of Patriarchs honored this calling. lie who spoke as never man spoke drew the vast majority of his illus trations from nature aod from the labors of the husbandman.
