Tlie farmers' Department. Make More Butter. Butter h very high and it is desirable to mcreaso the supply of au article in such general use. There is but one way of doing this. We cannot increase the number of cows bo as to meet the demand this fall and winter, but we can by liberal feeding en able the cows that we have to givo more milk, or at least we can pet more milk containing from one-third to one-half more butter. That liberal feed will do this there can be no questiou. What ex tra food to give depends on circumstan ces. The quality of the gras at this sea son is apt to deteriorate, and even when there is all abundance of ic, a little richer food can be given to the cows with great advantage. When gras3 is short, there is still greater necessity for and advantage in providing extra food. In many sec tions there is much corn imperfectly ear ed, and there can be no better way of dis posing of it than to feed it out, stalks and all. to milch cows. This will save husk ing. If well cured and put in a small stack, or in a barn, with layers of straw between the corn, verv few of the soft cars will mould. A liberal supply of such fodder will keep up the flow of milk un til Christmao, and if tho cows arc provid ed with warm stables, butter may be made nearlv all winter. When there is no fodder of this kind on the farm, feed ordinary corn stalks, or hav and straw, with a liberal allowance of some kind of train or of oil-cake, l'rob ablv cornmeal is the cheapest food that J . , , , . :.f. can be used, aaa so iar as mo writer t. perience extends, ho has never found any trouble in using it. Four quarts a day to each cow havo been used with great ad vantage, and at the present price ol butter such feeding is quite profitable. Some dairymen prefer to feed half cornmeal and half bran. When pea3 can be obtained at about the same price as corn, u mixture of equal parts of corn and pea-meal is per haps the very best food that can be given to a cow. If wheat bran was cheap, say but a littlo higher than buy, wo would feed that also. But our object is not so much to say which is the best grain to feed milch cows, as to urge farmers to feed graiu of pome kind. It does no, so much matter what, only give the cows c liberal sup ply of food, and they will supply a liberal return of butter. The kind of grain, and the way of feedingare lelt to the judgment imd p-nod sense of the readers. When it is convenient it is better to "slop" the cows, but if not convenient the fodder may be chaffed and moistened with water, and a due proportion of meal mixed with it, care being taken that the mangers are so constructed an to avoid waste. With a good supply of food, regularity in feeding, cumlortublc stablej cleaned out daily, prop er ventilation, and water easily accessible, there is no trouble in doubling the ordi nary quantity of butter from now until mid-wiuter or later. Judgino Horses by Appearances. I offer the following suggestions, tho re sult of my close observation and long ex perience If the color be light sorrel or chestnut, his fect, legs and lace white these are mark9 of kindness. If be is broad and full between the eyes, he m-ay bo depended on as a horse for being train ed to anything; c3 respects such horses, the more kindly you treat them the better you will be treated in return. Nor will a horse of this description stand a whip if well fed. It you want a safe horse, avoid one that is dish faced. Ho may be so tar gentle as not to scare, but he will have too much go ahead in him to be safe with ev erybody. If you want a fool, but a horse of great bottom, get a deep by with not a white hair about him. If his face is a little dished so much the worse. Let no man ride such a horse that is not an expert rider; they are always tricky and unsafe. If you want ono that will never give out, never buy a largo, overgrown one. A bhek horse cannot stand the heat, nor a white one cold. If you want a gentle horse, get one with more or less whi:e about the head, the more the better. Se lections thus made aro of great docility and gentleness. Cleansing Casks, Bottles, Etc. The inquiry is olten made of us by farmers, brewers, beef and pork packers, etc., re garding the best method of deodorizing and cleansing old cider and beer barrels, musty cans, bottles, etc. Chemistry fur nishes an agent in tho permangauate of potassa which fully meets this want. A pint of the permanganate turned into the most mimy, filthy cider or beer cask and rinsed about a lew moments, will entirely decompose all fungoid growths and fer menting matter, and render the cask as sweet as those that are new. The deodo rizing, disinfecting power of the perman ganate, holding as it does live equivalants of oxygen, is wonderful; it will even ueo dorizo carbolic acid. The only way tore move immediately the odor of carbolic ac id from the hands, is to imajcrse them in tho liquid permanganate. Huston Jour nal of Vltcmistry. Feedino Horses. The Arabs, tho most careful of their horses of any people, do most of their horse feeding at night They say that feediug in the day time does not impart o much vigor and elasti city to the animal as night mastication does. Their saying is that "barley at night goes to the buttock in the m;rniti to the manure." They afford water, too, very tpariugly during the day time. m . Hedges Are made in South America from the Aloe. It is a most useful tree; nearly every part serves some purpose a pweet pap flows from it when tapped; al kali is also produced from the leaves; the flowers make excellent pickles; the pith is used for sharpening knives, the roots arc woven into sacks, and the sharp frpincs arc used as needles. s U MM Kit GOODS FOR lSGo 1 1 WHO L ESA L E AND RETAIL.
