TIic I'iirmcrs' Ucparlisienl. PitrMNti Fruit Trees This is a sub ject, sap an exchange, -about which there is much controvert--; aud thousands of valu able trees, in nearly every pin of the Uni ted States, have been ruiucl by applying the knife improperly. Persons in the rural districts have been led to believe in spririr pruning. Itinerant charlatans have, from time to time, traversed the country at that season, lopping off huge limba without, number, leaving the crip pled trunk to eke out a miserable exist ence, and finally to dwindle and perish, to the great satisfaction of those who loathe the sight ot a muiilated orchard. Soon after the branches are thus severed, what are known as " weather-cracks" appear in the newly cut wood; and water penetrates as far as the original nodes from which the lost branches sprung, where rotten nu clei are soon formed near the heart ot'the tree, and not uufrequcntly extend their deadly effects several leet above the wound td parts. Innumerable adventitious shoots, 1. - . . I - . I. . J i ' i duced near the dccaing wood, that the superabundant .ap, otherwise provided for the lost branches, may circulate. The "water-sprouts" bear no fruit. In time, they rob the old fruit-bearing limbs ot fiurishment ; and the worthless, crippled, orI"LJu "Vuo.t is cut down as a cumber- muv, there are but two ways and times for pruning fruit trec3. Vine pruning is a very different thing. If I wish to cut liHck the hoot. of young trees to make ! he tops buhy, or rather low and dense, or any other shape that may be desired, the cutting is done just before, or at the time, the buds ire bursting iu spring. All heading-ill to form properly shaped tops on ourig trees should be dune about the first ot April, .vheu the a-cendiog sap will find veut by pushiug a number of eyes which otherwise might remain doimant. Bui this will not apply when the knife is used on any other than last year's growth. '1 he bud on healthy shoots two years old will generally push near the top where a part has been cut away, but eannot be relied on when nearly all are required to fill opeu spaces and form a -iensc symmetrical top. The cutting of large branches from bear ing trees should be avoided as much as possible. Nature generally sends the shoots where they are needed, and seldom where they will do injury. A branch should never bo lopped because it hangs too low; all such being of great value to trees in open grounds, for tho purpose of ehadiog the trunk, where the unbroken rays of a July sun will do more mischief than bard winters, borers and all other del eterious causes, combined. And when a branch appears to crowd the top, if It is cut away, an unsightly opening will be obvious at once. The smT and chisel arc used by far too much. A common clap knife is all that is neeessary for ordinary pruning. Hut there are ca-ses where the 8aw may be used to advantage when two limbs interfere so that both will bo in jured ifoue is not cut away, and when a branch is broken by hi;h winds or other wise. AH such pruning ihuuid be done ia the month of July, when mure eap is in the top of the tree that atany other pe riod. The descending f.ap from August tili No vember tonus the annular "ring ot new wood, and in it permanent duets tor the passage ot ascending sap the succeeding hpring. If we cut away one-halt the top ot any tree while the sap is down, double the usual amount will had its way into the remaining branches, thus crowding the ducts to as to lorce water-sprouts, much in the nature of leaks sprung into the embankment of an overcharged reser voir. Rut this may be avoided by cut ting the limbs while the ap is up. Sev er a iiiob in J uly, and part of the descend ing f-ap will moisten the wound, even keeping it as green wood, almost to the very edge of the cut; while the remaining portions will form a callus around the in jured part, with proper ducts, through which the sap will ascend next spring as regularly and healthfully as though no branch had ever been there. Tho cut will soon heal over, and the tree remain as sound a? if no amputation had takcu place. tm Winter PuoTKcrioN for Plants Allour readers know that snow i3 the very best plaut protector, Rut we do not know that it is much better than earth drawn ever the pin ts ju.-.t as the winter is about to set in. We have frtquenily reenn mend'.'d thi- in our Columns, but iiOt near m much use is made tf this fact as might be. ' For instance every one knows bow much Letter cuttings root, when taken offia the fall, than when it i deferred till spring but the fear ol having them drawn out by frost t-oems a greater evil. Now many ad'ipt our p'.au. Put the cuttings in in lull, atid cover with tvo or t4irvo inches ol earth. Iu the spring they will be through to the f urfucc ; or, if not, oome ol the erth tun he taken off. Much use, also, is made of the fact by many nurserymen to get young seedling .stock set vu'. It used to be the fashiou to buy them in the fall aud bury them cmplitely up iu a heap till spring, cov- ring to?is and all. But frritg always finds iiiori; work than the nurseryman can h. Under this Lew system of earth pro tection, he i.ow sets out hU young Mock where it is to remain, covering it entirely with earth, so d ut.cuvciiug it early in spring.
