Laming Horses. The horse is ens
of the most powerful, ambitious and sen
sible of domestic animal, and yet in a
certain sense, is iar from being a uardv
one. In thia respect, the hore"w not
equal to the rough and tumble usage which
the mule or even the oz' ecu bear without
exhibiting marked signs of the severe d'n
cipline to which they have been subjected.
In reviewing the many horses daily
thronging the street of the larger towns
and cities, the number of defectivo oues
can scarcely fail of beiu remarked.
Some are ailing in the fore limbs, others
in ihe hind one, and not a few in both.
This is nut necessarily the 'result of age,
defective blood, nor of special hard work,"
(hough iii some instances it may be so,
but much otteuer is the consequer.ee of
Careless handling, or a positive cruelty on
tbe part of those to whom they ere en
trusted. As has been already intimated, the
horse, in 1 certain sense, is a delicate an
imal, and it pounced upon in a passion
whi'e encumbered with harness, and pos
eibly with a load too heavy for easy mo7e
tiieot. the chances a're that efforts to escape
punishment will result in such an over
tension of the muscles as to produce per
manent lameness.
Everyone conversant with the, rough
and tumble work of the farm, the lumber
iWest-, stone quarries, the docks and the
l:ke, will have encountered many difficul
ty s i which teams and teamsters have
their .wer of endurance severely tried.
Both become excited and fractious, and
whatever tbe fault, if fault there be, the
horse is likely to receive pretty severe
treatment if not permanent damage. Not
a few horses are lamed under such circum
ifaice!, while others are injured by want
nf proper consideration on the part of those
Laviuir thi'tu in charge not from positive
ill treutuieut, but by carelessness in plac
ing the animals in such situations as to
cause unwonted exertions to escape from
an appreheuded danger.
Hough, boorish men are not suited to
the care of an animai having the spirit,
tenderness and susceptibility of the horse,
and if they were less frequently en
trusted with the management of stable
stock, there would be fewer limping and
comparatively valueless horses in our pub
lic thoroughfares than there are at pres
ent. The greatest care, it is true, cannot
prevent accidents to horses in all cases,
but witn proper attention the uumber of
the halting ones would constitute the ex
ception, and not the rule, as is now too of
ten the case.
Liquid Manure. We beliere there is
ho sjstem of enriching the land for email
gardens, with a viev to perfection of crops,
so truly economical and so easily available
as that of Using liquid manure. We oc
casionally hear of a gardener, or an ama
teur grower of some special plaat or crop,
that has practiced enriching with liquids,
but it is only occasionally; yet the result
of every record is in its favor, and a search
ing inquiry into any extra production of
fruit, flower, or plant almost invariably
gives watering with liquid manure as the
cause. There is in almost every family
waste or liquids, which usually go into the
sewer or drain, or possibly upon the road,
where they are of no avail, but if saved,
by being conducted to a tank, would en
rich the entire garden spot of vegetables,
email fruits, furnish stimulus to the rose
and other flower borders, and keep the
grass ilat green and fresh even in the
hottest and driest weaihcr of midsummer.
The use of a little plaster (gypsum) occa
sionally thrown in and around the tank,
would always keep it sweet and clean.
By the use and practice of liquid manu
ring, no delay need ever occur in planting
time because of the manure not being on
hand, or not being in a sufficiently rotted
condition ; but planting could proceed,
aod the application of manure be made at
leisure.- The Horticulturist.
