V The Farmer's Department. PAlNTl.va. Every farmer may be his own painter. Many inexperienced per sons, and indeed professional painters think that paint mixed in the s&me wav aa for ontaido work, will answer for the ioside of a house ; but experience dem enstrates in the most conclusive manner, to the reasonable and observing mind, that, necessarily, euch cannot be the act. Simple whitelead and linseed oil, mixed in ths earns manner as for outside work, will, it is true, harden, and act as a pow erful and highly economical pieservative of wood to which it is applied ; but in a few weeks the paint will become discolored and of a dusky yellow hue in consequence of the absorption of carbon which is eup- dicd by the smoke from the chimney, amps, and other sources. Why the same result is not remarkable on the outside is to be found in the fact thai the paint is not exposed to the 6ame influences ; but, on the contrary, is constantly bleached by the impinging rays of the sun, which op erate precisely as they do upon cotton and liuen fabrics when similarly exposed. "When a coating, id required for inside work, very little oil should be used, ex cept that contained in the lead. Spirits of turpentine should be the principal fluid introduced to thin paint, Japan, in f wall quantities, being added to accele rate the drying process. The priming, or first coat, however, should in all cases be mixed with oil alone, and when hard, smoothed by rubbing down with sand pa per. After this, two coats should co put on with turpentine alone, no oil being used, the final one being somewhat tho the thickest. If a good gloss if desira ble, a small quantity of varnish may be ad ded. To seoure a nice white finish for a euit of rooms, after putting on the paint very carefully, gum demar varnish should be applied. This makes a most splendid and durable gloss, and preserves unsullied the pure white of the most delicate paint. Should the paint become sullied, tho etains may be easily removed from the surface, simply by washing it with warm water; no soap should bo introduced iuto the fluid, as its action destroys the gloss of the coating, and is injurious to the faint. This varnish, introduced into the ast coat, gives a most superb finish ; but most painters prefer applying it after the work is finished and partially dry. In painting kitchens and other apart ments in common use, the best article i3 pure whitelead, although some persons prefer to add a little lamp-black or chrome yellow; but owing to the perpetual prea enceof carbonaceous substances it fioon be comes sullied, and presents a dirty and unpleasant appearance. Graining in im itation of maple, birch or some other light wood, is probably tho best coating that can be given to the wood-work of a kitch en. When well done, this kind of paint ing has a remarkably Deat aod even ele gant appearance ; it is easily cleansed, and when partially defaced by age, may be renovated and restored almost to its original brilliancy by a coat of varnish. The art of painting is one that may be acquired by any person of ordinary in genuity. G ermantouni Telegraph. m Rules fob Cow Management. Cows should run dry six weeks before calving; if milked closely toward calving, the calves will be poorer. A cow newly come in should not drink cold water in co'.d weather, but moderate ly warm slop. Calves, intended for rais ing, should betaken from the cow within m few days, and they will be less liable to suck when they are old. Feed them first en new milk for awhile, then skim milk, taking care that all the changes are grad ual, by adding only a portion at first. Hearty eaters are desirable for cows, and may usually be selected while calvea. A dainty calf will be a dai-oty cow. Heifers dried up too early after calving, will always run dry about the same time in after years therefore be careful to milk closely the first year, until about eix weeks before calvicg. Spring cows should come in while they re yet fed on hay, and before they are turned to grass, which will be more likely to prevent oaked bag and milk faver. Exchange. Work fob a Wbt Day A practical farmer jots down the following ia appro priate : Barnyard to shovel up and aanure to haul to next fall's wheat ground. Barn doors, yard gates, etc., to mend. Drains and waste-water outlets to be attended to. Mowing machines to be put i czdar ; a'.so, horse-rake and hay tender. Grease wagons, mend harness indbcgs, wash carriages. Cut and haul wood and lean oct cellcr, whitewash, etc. Hen-house to clean out, od compost for corn to make. m m Tomatoes roa Winter Use. After skinning perfectly ripe tomatoes, cut out any green around the base. I think lsav ing in this hard green core is the imme diate cause of the los of the fruit. Place them in a bell metal kettle over the fire; season with salt as if for immediate use; then only allow them to come to a boil; while hot put ia stone candor small mouthed gillcn jars, cork and seal, if proper judgment be exercized you will never lusa one jar. OacnARDS. To promote healthy sod vigorous growth in orchards, so as to iur- niah the best fruit , never mw any kind of grain or plant corn in them, because it is ruinous to the trees. Vlant potatoes or some other root crops cm3r.g your trees, and you will be agreeably surprised at the growth compared with those among which grain crops are sown. - - EARLY TO bed and early to rise make a man healthy, wealthy, aad wise. gUMMER GOODS FOR 186S ! !
