bo able to announce tliat the subscription
list of The Alleoiianian is steadily in

in view when wo revived The; Atxegiia
NIAN, namely, secure for it the largest cir
culation of any paper in Cambria county.
We return our sincere thanks to many
kind friends for what they have already
done for-m in this behalf, and hope that
they will not weary in well-doing. Our
iidvertising patronage Li good, as a glance
nt mr columns will show, while our supe

Mils, blanks, cards, &c, are bringing u.s
our share of job work. In a word, OJr
prospects arc very flattering. In order to
accommodate our patrous throughout the
county, we have prevailed upon the fol

atgents in their respective neighborhoods.
They will receive orders for subscriptions,
advertising, or job work for us, and will

tain. The Altoona Tribune of last week
says : On Saturday last, as one of the en
gines, which had assisted in taking an Ex
press passenger train up the mountain,
was returning down the mountain, at reg
ular speed, the break chain of the tender
gave way, whereupon the engineer revers
ed the motion of his engine, and in doing
so knocked out the cylinder heads, thus
leavin" ti-0 irachine without any means of
checking its speed. Being freed from all
restraint, on a grade of D5 feet to the
mile, it gained velocity at each revolution
of the wheels, and soon Attained a momen
tum of sixty miles an hour, at which time
the engineer and fireman bid the concern
good bye, their action being accelerated by
the fact that the engine was rapidly n par
ing the rear end of a freight train, and
there was every prospect of a smashing
time. When the cngir.e and train collid
cd, some three or four of the freight cars
were badly damaged, as also the engine.
Had the freight train been standing still,
instead of moving at full speed in the same
direction as the engine, the destruction
would have been much greater.

LETTER FROM JOHNSTOWN TUB GAME OF BASE
BALL BETWEEN THE "AI017NTAINEEB.9" OF
EBENSBCRO AND THE "KICKS" OF JOHNSTOWN
THE MOUNTS. GET KICKED.
Johnstown, September 1, 18G3.
To the Editors of The Alleghanian :
On Friday last, over 100 citizens of
Ebensburg visited Johnstown, on an ex
cursion, to witness the return game of base
ball between the Mountaineers of Ebens
burg, and the Kicks of this place.
The game commenced at 2 1 o'clock, the
3Iountaineers sending the Kicks to the
bat, who scored only one run in the inning.
The Mountaineers batted well for four
runs. In the second inning, the Kicks
scored 3 runs, to 3 for the 3Iountaineers.
The third inning gave the Kicks 3, to 2
for the Mountaineers
At this stage of the game, Jones, the
catcher of the 3Iountaincers, sprained his
ankle badly, while running, and was
obliged to retire from the field. His place
in the nine was filled by a substitute ; but
from this moment, the Kicks commenced
gaining, and had things pretty much their
own way during the balance of the game.
Rain fell during a portion of the game,
making the ball slippery and hard to han
dle. But the play was good throughout,
and was witnessed by a large concourse of
spectators. I subjoin the score :
