A Compliment. From an article in a
lute number of the Pittsburg Mail, tra
cing the rise and progress of the Pittsburg1
Gaztttf, the oldest daily in Pennsylvania,
we clip the following mention of one of its
present editors, 3Ir. Thomas P. Houston :
"Thomas P. Houston glided into neivspa
perdom from a combination of circumstances,
and passed his novitiate on the reportorial
staff of the Dispatch, where he made himself
useful as well as ornamental. There are few
who have more warm personal friends than
he. As a writer, his taste is very refined,
and hi3 elegant chirography is often in keep
ing with his diction. Houston would be a
valuable acquisition to any newspaper."
31 r. Houston is well known here, and
his many friends will be glad to read this
appreciative notice of one whom they es
teem as a gentleman , scholar, and good
fellow. The ftazt tte, under its present
efficient management, is in most prosper
ous condition, its yearly profits being over
$30,000.
Accidents. On Friday evening last, a
young son of our townsman, 3Ir. John
Lloyd,- was struck on the head by a base
ball bat which accidentally slipped out of
the hands of a phryer on the 'Olountain
eer" grounds. He was struck near the
temple and-was badly injured, but is now
recovering.
James C. Easly, Esq., of Carrolltown,
was thrown from a buggy on our streets
on S.,turdaj', by the jolting of the vehicle
while crossing a gutter, and was badly
cut about the head and face. Nothing
serious.
31 r. George Williams, an employee in
Darter's steam mill, in Susquehanna tp.,
had his hand badly mashed on Saturday
by contact with some part of tho ma
chinery. Personal. Dan. P. Thompson, whose
mercantile card is published on the fourth
page of this paper, is in town on a visit,
lie is one of the most popular salesmen
and represents one of the most popular
business houses in Philadelphia.
'Doe" Thompson, clerk in the Philadel
phia 1. O., spent a few days at home here
List week. . .
Our amiable friend, Dr. J. L. Drallier,
of Philadelphia, has been in our midst
during the past couple of weeks, revisiting
his old 'stamping-grounds." A host of
friends are always glad to see him.
A Good Idea. We hear that the
Pennsylvania llailroad Company have it
under consideration to run the Ebensbura:
branch train as an accommodation passen
ger train through from Ebensburg to
Johnstown twice a day and. return. Such
an arrangement would undoubtedly be a
great convenience to the people of the two
points named, and no less to the people
living along the route traversed. We
hope it may go into effect.
Fun Ahead. We learn that a grand
picnic in aid of the new Catholic church
of St: Augustine will be held in that place
cm Tuesday next, 25th inst. A picnic
will also be held at Loretto on the Thurs
day following, in aid of the Catholic church
of that place. A' couple of excellent op
portunities for recreation and fun are thus
afforded the public. "
'Accident. A young man named De-
lozicr, of Clearfield township, accidentally
shot himself with u pistol the other . day.
The ball passed through his arm and en
tered his breast, lodging against the collar
bone. . It was extracted, and the wounded
man is now doing, well.

LETTER FROM JOHNSTOWN A MAN STRUCK BY
BLUE LIGHTNING AND SERIOUSLY INJURED
TUB POLITICAL CALDRON BEQLNNINO TO BOIL
THE CONEMAUGH PARK, AC, AC.
Johnstown, August 17, 1SGS.
To the Editors of The Alleghanian :
On Saturday last, a man named John
Garens, employed on the P. R. 11. deep
cut east of Conemaugh, met with what al
most proved a fatal accident. He came to
town that day, and while perambulating
our streets, succeeded in getting on an
over-dose of his favorite poison, "blue
lightning." The consequence was, that,
while attempting to get on the Accommo
dation East to go home, the train being in
motion, he was thrown violently therefrom,
and might easily have been killed, but es
caped with a serious cut on the back of his
head and a sprained ankle.
The political campaign" will begin in
earnest in this place on Tuesday, August
25th. On that day, a grand Republican
rally will be held on the public square, to
be addressed by Gen. Carl Schurz and
other distinguished speakers. The meet
ing will bo held in the evenins.
A number of our energetic business and
sporting men have organized a society
styled the "Conemaugh Park Association."
They propose to open out a park on the
banks of the Conemaugh river, opposite
Woodvale, and work thereon will be-commenced
immediately.
A social party, composed chiefly of
youDg men connected with the Company's
store, went to Denscrcck House, Dens
creek, on Thursday night last, and return
ed uext morning, WC-H pleased with their
trip and, its varied experiences.
The Grant and Colfax club and the
Seymour and Blair club are actively enga
ged in perfecting their respective organi
zations. Each club holds weekly meet

LETTER FROM CRESSON BRACING AIR, PCRE
WATER, ROMANTIC SCENERY, AND SUMMER
VISITORS NEW WAREU0CS5, AC, AC.
Cresson, Aug. 17, 1SG8.
To the Editors of The Alleghanian : -
I am much pleased to see that yur
paper has been resuscitated, because it has
ever been the most interesting and spiciest
and by far the best local journal published
in the county. Although I cannot sym
pathize with you politically, I wish you
entire pecuniary success, and hope your
brightest anticipations will be more than
realized.
The pure, bracing air always to be met
with on the rugged tops of the Alleghany
3Iountains, together with the romantic
scenery and springs of sparkling water,
appear to have attracted the attention of
those who make their abode in the heated,
unhealthy cities. "This is shown by the
fact that the different watering places, ho
tels, and even many private residences, in
this section, are absolutely crowded with
guests in .pursuit of health and pleasure.
The Cresson Springs Hotel is this summer
more than usually crowded with guests.'
embracing among the number some of the
most distinguished personages in the
country. .
The Penna. R. R. Co. have commenced
the erection of a large brick warehouse at
this station. It is located on the north
sida of the track, in front of the Callan
Hotel. This was badly needed, as the old
warehouse is entirely too small, and a poor
concern at that.
3Ir. J. E. Shields, of Loretto;-was mar

ther, of Carrolltown. 3Iay their pathway

LETTER FROM CHEST SPRINGS THE WEATHER
AND THE CBOP3 BASE BALL POLITICS, AC.
Chest Si'Rixc.s. August 17, 1808.
To the Editors of The Alleghanian :
The weather this year, in this locality,
has been extremely warm and dry7 Fears
are entertained that the corn crop will not
he half an average yield this fall, while
the potato crop will prove an almost total
failure. Ere another year rolls round, the
latter may be quite a dainty dish in this
neighborhood.
The match game of base ball between
the first nine of the Ionians of this place
and the first nine of the St. Augustine
club did not come off on Saturday, as per
arrangement. ' It is hoped wc shall be al
lowed to witness this gauie ere the season
for ball playing passes by.
The Iomons of this place intend visit
ing Ebensburg on next Saturday, 22d, to
play a social game of ball with your 3Ioun
taineers. ,
Several attempts have been made to o-:-ganize
what they call a Democratic club
iii this place, but thus far. unsuccessfully.
I have as yet never known more than three
or four of the ' "unterrified" to be" iii at
tendance at any of the meetings. i
The present season has been a very
healthy one in this community, although
the Doctor has occasionally a little of
something to do.
