About Chickens. It is pretty gen
erally conceded that no one U buceeegful
who attempts to keep together a largo
number of fowls, and that these who keep
tho pmallcpt number together generally
obtain the greatest proportionate cumber
of eg.'f. And this is, we think, not only
true, but easily accounted for.
Every one who has kept fowls know
that they are very uncleanly birds. They
even was-h thcm-ilvrs in the dirt, and
that evidently not fur the purpose of e'ea:i
linefs, but to rid themselves of vermin.
They prefer clean, light sand, bt cause if
in the tun, it is generally warmer, and is
easily moved ; but they seeru equally to
enjoy any toft, dr3' earth, although it may
not bo very sweet umI clean. They aie
notoriously filthy in their coops, rooming
under each other, taking no pains to avoid
the dropping, soiling their food, water,
and nests with their dropping?, and d;ing
no act, apparently, toward cleanliness.
ThL is mure manifest in tho house where
they are eonfii.cd, ami when; the air tho'd
be as pure as possible. If they are ut
large, uud few in number, they move
around so much that they cannot our ttie
ground. They are by nature clean, but
by habit the reverse, and the ouly way to
keep them in their natural Eta'e is to give
them range enough, t-o that they cannot
toil their haunts, or else cleanse their
haunts carefully every day.
We ouce kept one solitary hen several
months. She was of the common barn
yard Lrecd. We never saw a healthier
fowl, or one whose -leathers kept o fresh
and perfect, and she was a constant layer.
No care was taken of her, and we always
attributed her thrift to the fact that she
had the whoU range of a farm for exercite
and her quarters were always clean.
As soon as your flock becomes large,
you will find them crowding together aud
Eouring ihtir hauut?. You may do some
thing towards preventing this, but you
cannot keep large flocks very clean.
We have often tsccti it Mated that no
more than fifty bens should be kept iu a
luu-hou.se twenty feet by ten. Except
with constaut care and cleanlincs-, that
number caunot do very well ia a smaller
space. Close up such a house gome cold
night, when you have neglected to cleau
it lor a few days, and you will be surpri
sed at the impurity of the air therein.
Drive the flock out into the open air, and
yuu will sec what a change it produces in
them, and how lively they will become in
a lew minutes.
Tho mzc of the flock must always de
pend upon the extent of the accommoda
tion, and even then largo flocks cannot
be kept as clean and healthy as Email
ones, and therefore are not in proportion
0 prtfliiible. Cuuntry Gentleman.
That Axe. The other day (writes a
correspondent) I was holding a man by a
hand as firm in its outward texture a
leather, ad his sunburnt iace was as in
flexible as leather. lie was pouring fort'i
a tirade of contempt on those tvhu com
plain that they can find noti icg to do v.s
an excuse fur becoming loalcrc
Said I: "Jeff, what do vou work at?
You look hearty and happy ; what are
you at 7" "Why," said he, "i bought me
au axe three years ago, that cot me two
dollars. That was aJl the money I had.
1 went to chopping wood by the cord, and
have done nothing else sicice, and hae
rained more than six hundred dollar.-,
have drunk no grog, paid no doctor, and
have bouiiht me a little farm out West,
and shall be married uext week o a uirl
who has earned two hundred dollars since
he was eighteen. My old axe I shall
keep in the drawer, and buy me a new cue
to cut my wood with." After I left him,
1 thought to myself, "that axe" and "no
grog!" they are two things to make a
man in this world. How small a capital.

Prkvextive Aoain.sc tub Turnip
.t'l.Y. A great many n undies and meth
ods have been suggested to prevent the at
tacks of the turnip fly, when the plants
are in au early f:ate of" growth. One
jut-ihod, which hns proved ol considerable
service, is that of steeping the seeds in oil,
m J then during them with sulphur just
before the (-owing. Another me'ho'i i
ihut of iuixic g lime aud soot together and
thistiug the jlants. This mixture has
proved very effectual in protecting the
vouuj plants as they put out the Cit
leaves. Little damage i? done by the
turnip fly alter the rouh lea ves sre form
id ; but its place is filled by other insects
that Iced on the leaves, the most common
o f h ich id t li e black beetle. The best
and most effectual way to get rid of all in
bccts is to pu.h forward the growth of the
plant by manures applied at the time the
