LETTER FROM LORETTO DEDICATION OF A NEW CHAPEL BURGLARIOUS ATTEMPT, C. Loretto, Sept. 25, 1867; To the Editor of The Alltghanian t Notwithstanding the fact that our little village has been very quiet for several weeks, yet I have picked up a couple of items which may interest some of your readers. Yesterday, the new chapel just finished by the Sisters of Mercy was dedicated. The Right Rev. Bishop Domenes, of Pittsburg, and a number of priests from the neighboring parishes, were here, and participated in the ceremonies, which were solemn and imposing. On last Wednesday night, a burglari ous attempt wa8 made on the convent of the Sisters of Mercy by a band of wan dering scoundreli. At about half-past 5 o'clock in the evening, two very hard lookiDg fellows, exhibiting revolvers, made their appearance at tbe door and deman ded admittance, but were refused. They thereupon left, flourishing their weapons, and making use of violent threats. They were not seen again until about midnight, when fhoy reappeared before the door, re enforced by five other fellows, and en deavored to break inr The doors and windows, however, proved to be too se curely fastened, and the marauders went away as empty-handed ss they came. Yours, Ae , Acorn. LOCAL CORRESPONDENCE. LXTTXR FROM JOHXSTOWV BASI BALL MATTERS THE FIRST OCX OF-THE CAMPAIGN ACCI TXSTS TiWMI. Johnstown, Sept. 23, 1867. To the Editor of The Alltghanian : An exeiting game of base ball was played here on Friday last, between- the Kickenapawlings and Junior Indepen dents. At the beginning of the game, tbe impression was general that the Kicks would have things all their own way, but it proved a delusion, for at the close of the fifth inning the Juniors led the score five runs. Game was called at the end of the seventh inning, on account' of the rain, which came down in torrents. The score stood a tie, 35 to 35. The promised games between the Juni atas of Hollidaysburg and tho Irons and Kicks of this place did not come off last week, owing to the failure of the Juniatas to come to time. A large Republican meeting was held on the public square on Saturday. It was ably addressed by B. F. Lucas, Esq., of Pittsburg. Pat. The man Hornick and wife, who were sent to th Western Penitentiary from this county some thirteen months ago, for rubbery, hare returned to their home in this place. Proposals are advertised for the buil ding of the stooe work of the new Union Hall structure. The Beethoven troupe of this place will give a Vocal concert, comic and sentimen tal, on Monday evening, 30th instant, at the Presbyterian church. A rich treat is promised. The firm of Rist & Kost, of this place, are becoming famous for the excellent quality of the article of lager beer manu factured by them. Your saloon keepers would do well to introduce it up there.
