An Accipknt How Bill Got Shot.
"Bill, don't you know that dad don't
allow jon lo buy shot?" asked a young
urchin of his brotberrwbo was making a
purcbaso of tbat article.
"You just never mind me," faid the
other boy. "I'll thank you to attend to
yonr own business, Mister Bob. I don't
care what dad allows ; I'll buy what I
pleaie."
"I'm going to tell dad," paid Bob, and
be rushed home and into the room where
the old man was quietly reading the mor
ning paper.
"Dad, dad," yelled the boy, "Bill's went
and got shot I"
"Good heavens!" exclaimed the old
man, dropping the paper and boltiDg for
the door; "where is lie ?"
"Down to Smith's store," responded
Bob.
In his excitement, the old man forgot
to remove bis reading glasses, and in go
ing down the steps ho misjudged the
dUtance to the pavement, stepped off too
qon, and landed on all fours.
He gathered himself up and started for
the $tore. The pavement appeared to him
to be about level with his kuecs, and con
sequently in his" violent efforts to keep it
under him, he cut a very ludicrou fig
ure, and drew from the astonished by
standers roars of laughter.
lie at length arrived tt the store,
where Bill was stretched out on the coal
box, taking it cay. Tie old man, sup
posing him badly hurt, ru&htd frantically
top to him, exclaiming,
"U, wham ! Uiihunj ; where aro you
Wounded ?"
"What's the matter, dad? Are you
crazy ?" asked Bill, raiding on his elbow,
and casting a look of astonishment at the
old man.
"Why, Robert Faid you'd got shot V
"So 1 did got hall a pound of the best
hot in the store."
The old man left, amid noise enough to
drown a thunder clap. As might be's up
posed, Bob got the flogging and Bill
didn't.
IIow TiiEY Do It. A wealthy man
cf Boston, who owns a country residence
in the puburbs of that city, recently be
came dissatisfied with it and determined
to have another, and instructed an auc
tioneer, famous for his descriptive powers,
to advertise it in the papers at private
ale, but to conceal its location, telling
purchasers to apply at his office. In a
lew days, the gentleman happened upon
the advertisement, but failed to recognize
Tt as referring to his own property. lie
was greatly pleased with the account of
the place, showed it to his wife, and the
two coucluded it was just what they want
d and they would secure it at once. So he
went to the office of the auctioneer, and
told him that the place he had advertised
was such an one as he desired and he
would purchase it. The auctioneer burst
into a laugh, and told him that it was a
description of his own house that he had
been reading. The merchant pondered
for a time on the "grassy slopes," "beau
tiful vista," "smooth lawn," etc., cf the
advertisement, and then exclaimed "Is
it possible! Make out my bill for adver
tising and expenses, Mr. Auctioneer, for,
by George, I wouldn't sell the place now
lor three times its cost !"
A Hint to Candidates. A candi
date for office, canvassing his district,
came upon a man who had a vote to cast.
The man was milking a cow.
"Shall I hold her?" asked the office
reeker, noticing the animal was somewhat
fractious.
The voter consented, and the office
eceker took the cow by the horns. The
voter kept on with his milking.
"Hare you had Bron around here
lately?" presently asked the candidate,
referring to his rival.
"Oh, yes," replied the voter; "he is
behind the barn now, holding the calf !"
