    An Inquisitive Yankee. A corre
spondent writing lrom Newport, K. I.,
relates the iollowing : Hon. Duncan C.
Pell, who was Lieutenant Governor of
this State last year, is a man of consider
able eccentricity of character a whole
aouled, good hearted man, but decidedly
odd in ninny respects. Nothing so much
disturbed his equanimity as for persona
to exhibit a curious disposition, and at
tempt to learn more of hid affairs than he
ehnse to tell.
Many years ago, Mr, Pell concluded to
ecct a fence around one of his lots iu the
city, and in order to save himself from
the daily interrogatories which ho knew
would be made by his neighbors and
passers-by, he had a sign painted, on
which he displayed nil the information in
regard to the lence which he fancied
eould posfibly be demanded or desired.
He gave full information on the follow
ing points: Who was the owner of the
land; why he fenced it in; how much
lumber the fenco was to contain j where
he bought ir, and how much a foot he
paid for itj the quantity of nail to be
used; the name of the builder, and the
exact amount of land to be enclosed.
Self-satisSed that he had answered all
the questions that could be asked, "Mr.
Pell was quite happy in the idea that he
had freed himself entirely from imperti
nent inquiries.
But one night," or rather very early on
an exceedingly disagreeable morning, Mr.
Pell was awakened from a deep sleep by
a loud knocking at his front door. The
call appeared to be bo urgent that Mr.
Pell thrust his head out of the window
and demanded, in no gentle tone, "What
in h ll's the matter !"
"Does Mr. Pell live here ?" came from
the intruder below.
"Yes. What do you want 1"
"Mr. Duncan C. Pell Y"
."Yes ; Duncan C. Pell."
"Is it the Mr. Pell who is building the
fence on Mary street 1"
"Yes the same. What of it V
"Well, Mr. Duncan 0. Pell, will you
bo kind enough to inform me whether
jou intend painting that fenco or white
washing it V
The answer and the window went down
together, and Mr. Pell went back to bed,
aatisfied that there could be no escape on
earth from Yankee inquisitiveness.

All for a Dance. "I believe a wo
man wou'd do a great deal for a dance,"
said Dr. Growling. "I remember once in
my life," he went on to say, "that I used
to flirt with one who was a great favorite
in a provincial town where I lived, and
who confided to mj that she had no stock
ings fit to wear, and without them her
appearance at a certain ball was out of
the question."
"That was a hint for you to buy the
stockings," said Dick.
"No you're out," quoth Growling.
"She knew that I was as poor as herself ;
but, though she could not rely on my
purse, she had every confidence in my
taste and judgment, and consulted me on
a plan she had formed for going to the
ball in the proper trim. Now, what do
jou suppose it was ?"
"To go in cotton, I puppose," ventured
Dick.
"Out again, sir you'd never guess it,
and only a woman would have hit upon
the expedient. It was tho fashion in
those days for ladies in full dress to wear
pink stockings, and she proposed painting
her legs that color."
"Painting her legs l exclaimed one
and all, in horror.
"Fact, sir," said the doctor ; "and she
carried out her proposition to the letter.
After she had painted the stockings, she
came to roe to ask if the cheat was suc
cessful. Of course I told her it was.
But the little chit boxed my ears for one
remark I made. 'Jennie, said I,, 'for
fear your stockings should fall down while
you are dancing, suppose I paint a pair of
garters to them I' "

An Irishman's Letter. Theiollow
is a true copy of a letter received from
across the water :
My Dear Nephew I have not heard
anything from ye sens the last time I
wrote ye. I have moved from the placo
where I live now or I should have written
to you before. I did not kno where a
letter might find you first, but I now take
my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to
inform ye of the deth of your own liven
uncle Kilpatrick. He died very suddenly
after a long lingering illness of six mouths.
Poor man he suffered a reat deal. He
lay a long time in convulsions, perfectly
speeehles, all the time talking incohe
rently and inquiring for water. I am
very much at a loss to tell ye what his
death is occasioned at, but the doctor
thinks it was occasioned by his last sick
ness for he was not well ten days at a time
during. his confinement. His" age ye kno
jiet as well as I can tell ye lie was
twenty-five years old last March lacking
fifteen months and if he had lived till
this time he would have been six months
died jest.
N. B. Take notis I enclose a tin pound
note which ycr father sends to you unbe
knone to me. Your mithcr often spakes
of yc she wud like to send you the brin
die cow and I would enclose to ye but for
her liorruns.
I beg of ye not to break the pale of this
letter until two or three days after ye read
ii, for which timo ye'll be Letter prepared
for the sorrowful news.

"In short, ladies and gentlemen' said
an overpowered orator, "I can only say
beg leave to add I desire to assure you,
that I wish I had a window to my bosom,
that you might see the emotions of my
heart."
