The Spread Eaqle Penny Hoax. !
About the first ot April, some one started
tbe report that the nickel cents of 1858,
containing the celebrated "spread eagle,"
had become very scarce, owiDg to the fact
that the government was calling them in,
in- consequence of a mistake having been
made in the alloy,. by which their Value
was greatly enhanced. 'It was asserted
that the amount of gold used in the alloy
znada the Coin ' worth about twenty-five
cents. One and all at once begau exam
inning their pocket books, tills, &c. , and
it was generally found that the coin was
quite plenty. Hundreds of them have
been gathered together, and tho search
Bull continues. Ihe lnaetatigaDie reiic
hunters are now'endeavoriog to make sale
of their collections, but find it an up-hill
business, .as the nickel issue of 1858 is
really worth no more than its face one
cent. Aa enterprising lady residing in
Philadelphia is said to have collected no
less than five hundred of the pennies re
ferred to, and to have carried them to the
mint for exchange but sad indeed was
her disappointment on finding that she
was the victim of - misplaced confidence,
and that her bright anticipations of gain
were destined to not be realized. The
officers' of the mint declined taking the
pennies at all. An editor in West Ches
ter published the statement that the pen
nies were actually worth twenty-five cents
apiece, when one of his subscribers sent
in four of the premium-bearing nickels,
with a request to have one dollar credited
to his accuunt for subscription. This was
morA fVinn th editor TijmI hjirfft? nPfl fnr.
" w w . I
and he was compelled to come out in tho
next number of his paper and acknowl
edge that he knew nothing whatever on
the eubject of the premium that he had
found the statement afloat in another pa
per, and had printed it just as he had
found it that he washed his hands of the
whole affair and that, iu conclusion, he
begged leave to decline the offer of his
kind subscriber. In short, the bubble
has bursted, and the "nickels with the
eaglo onto them" will cease to be hunted
and hoarded.

A Keceipt Worth One Thousand
Dollars. The Ohio Cultivator says :
Take one pound of sal . soda and a half
pound of unslacked lime, put them in a
gallon of water and boil twenty minutes,
let it stand till cool, then drain off, and
put in a strong jug or jar; soak your
dirty clothes over night, or until they
are wet through, then wring them out
and rub on plenty of soap, and to one
boiler of clothes well covered with water,
add one tea-cupful of washing fluid ; boil
half an hour briskly, "then wash them
thoroughly through one suds, rinse,' and
your clothes will look better than the old
way of washing twice before boiling.
Thi3 is an invaluable receipt,-and I want
every poor, tired woman to try it. I think
with a patent washtub to do the little
Tubbing, the washerwoman might take the
old Bible and compose herself on a iouuge
and let the washing do itself.
