wards, Griffin & Co. were lately brought
belore Court in Chicago, on the charge ot
beiug : vagrant?, when one of them made
the ' following revelations : "These two
pentlemen and . myself are the firm of
Edwards, G tiffin & Co. We are propo
sers. By that I mean we proposer, to
young ladies and help to ?et them married.
We are benefactors. When wc see a
jonng lady who is not, "and never has
been engaged, one of us says to her : 'We

after marriage.' Of course she says yes.
For the time being, one of usia considered
as engaged to her. We trumpet the fact
abroad. Whenever the other two of us
meet a young man who is not engaged,
we say : 'What a lucky dog Griffin i? !
He has won Miss X And we praise
her. We encourage the young man logo
in and cut. Griffin out, for the fun of the
thing. Being a fool, like most young
men, he docs it. ile proposes to MissX,
knowing that she is engaged to Griffin,
and hardly expecting that she will accept

myself have been engaged twenty-five

Hard' Hit at the Home Guards.
During the last stage of the war, says the
Richmond Enquirer, whilst the Confeder
ate army was retreating through South
Carolina, Sergeant M'D , of Western
North Carolina, was sent on detail to the
town of M , where a regiment of home
guards were stationed. The valorous
heroes, seeinga soldier from the front,
gathered around him, eagerly inquiring
the news. "News !" eaid Mack solemnly,
'I believe there is none. Yes, there is a
little, too, but it's not of much importance ;
old Hardee burnt up a regiment of home
guards at Florence the other day, to keep
them from falling into the enemy's hands."
Mack walked coolly on, and no more ques
tions were asked.

A Thief and a Robber. The Eng
lish Independent saya that Rev. William
Thorpe, of Bristol, England, was so large
that in preaching an ordination sermon lie
h&u to.be hoisted into the pulpit over the
tide, the door being too narrow to admit
him. Ciiriously enough, his sermon was
on "ThVImportance of a Right Introduc
tion into the Christian Ministry," and he
founded his discourse on the parable in
which it is declared that "He that entcreth
in . by the door is the shepherd of the
sheep ; while he that climbeth up some
ether way, the same is a thief and a
robber."
