Skeleton No. 4. A Paris correspon dent gives the following characteristic story of the strategy "of an impecunious medical student : : The landlady of a certain medical stu dent, who ineffectually dunned her delin quent tenant for some time, resolved at last upon resorting to extreme measures. She entered the student's room one morning, and said in a decided tone : "You must either pay me my rent or be off this very day." 'I prefer to be off," said the student, Tiho on his side was prepared for the encounter. "Well, then, ir, pack up, directly." I assure you I will, madam, if you will assist me a little." " "With the greatest pleasure." ' The student, thereupon, went to the wardrobe, tranquilly opened a drawer and took out a skeleton, which be banded to the dame "Will you have the kindness to place this at the bottom of my trunk, folding it up?" "What ia that ?" asked the landlady, recoiling a little. "That?" "Yes, that." - "Pooh, that ! Oh, it is the skeleton of my first landlord. He was inconvenient enough to slaim the rent of three term9 that I owed him and then ! be careful not to break it; it is No. 1 of my collec tion." "Monsieur I" exclaimed the dame, grow ing visibly paler. The student, without replying, opened a second drawer and .took out another skeleton. "This is my landlady in the ruo 'Ecolc de Medecin. A very worthy woman, but who also demanded the rent of two term?. Will you place it upon the other ? It is No. 2." The landlady opened her two eyes as large as porlc cochercs. "This," continued the student, "this is No. 3. They are all here ! A very honest man, and whom I did not pay, either. Let ua pass on to No 4." - But the landlady was no looger there. She had fled, almost frightened to death. ' From that day, no more was said about the rent. Considered it Doubtful The Ten nessee Legislature was in session when Fort Donaldson fell, leaving the Federals free to occupy Nashville. Hearing a great stir in the Governor's office below, a committee was sent to see what was going on. They found bis excellency packing up, preparatory to leaving. He handed the committee a dispatch announ cing the fall. When the committee re turned, Mr. W. was in the chair, and just on the point of adjourning. Addressing the House, he said : "And now, gentlemen, God will tako care of us, and if we do not meet again here, wc shall meet in heaven." A member from East Tennessee, who had been dczing off the effects of the fluid to which he was addicted, hearing the last words of the Speaker's remarks, roused up and delivered himself thus: "Stop ! Mr. Chairmain, don't adjourn us to that place. If you do, tee shall never get a quorum I" 1867. 1807.
