" ' i - - ' Loretto, AprU 22t 1867. i To tht Editor of The Alleghanian : With us, the last few days have been quite lively. This is the last of the Len ten season, a time that is strictly observed by Catholics as a season of prayer, and as this is an almost exclusively Catholic community,' the streets are each day thronged with people going to and coming from church A stranger,-ignorant of Catholio practices, coming into town, would be led to suppose our little village quite a business place. The weather is very pleasant. Spring appears to have fairly set in, and the farmers are taking advantage of the fine weather, and are busy planting their grain.. During the last week,. there was much seeding done, and plowing has nearly been finished. The .different watering places,, hotels and boarding houses, are making prepa rations for a laTge crowd of visitors from the cities this season. . It is expected there will be a larger turnout than usual on account of the cholera, which it is feared will prevail during the hot season. All of the rooms in several of our boarding houses are already engaged. Quite an amusing incident occurred here on Saturday evening last. A few "ladies' men," whose fair ones would not "meet them by moonlight alone," deter mined to go "where their loves lay dream ing" and give vent to their "phelinks" in the sweet strains of music 'Thoy were as quietly as possible preparing their instruments for this purpose under the window of one of the charmers, when,lo! the window was hoisted, and a nightcap inquired Vwno's there?" The. young men now discovered that they were "bark ing up the wrong hapling" in fact, that they had got under a window they didn't want to get under and unceremoniously ran off. The inmates of the house, think iog they were robbers, gave the alarm, arousing all in the neighborhood, who started in hot pursuit of the affrighted lovers. After running some distance, the pursuit was given over after a good, hearty laugh. Acorn., rZAKrtl. TORJTADO IN TBI HORTHXAST 07 Till COCKTT GBXAT DXSTRCCTIOX 0 PROPXRTT, AC, AC. Cuest Springs, April 22, 1867. - To the Editor of The Alleghanian: This section was visited by a. terrible tornado on Saturday evening last. The storm did not reach this town, but passed about one mile north. It appears to have passed entirely across Clearfield township. It was so violent as to tear down every thing that came in its track. Mr. James Mulligan had the roof torn off his house ; Francis Durbin's and Patrick Montgom ery's houses were moved off their founda tions, and the roof of William M'MulIin's house was blown off and his barn was torn down. I did not hear of any person being hurt. The tornado took its track nearly direct from west to east across Clearfield tp. It passed through one of the best tinibcr sections in the township, tearing the timber out by the roots, breaking it off, and debtroving many thousand dollars' worth. It tore svefythiog down that came in its track, fences, trees, &e. It even tore the earth up in floma. places. An untold amount of damage was done to the farmers in Clearfield tp. Boz. The tornado here spoken of also exten ded to Carroll and Blacklick townships, doing much damage in those localities. Ed.Allty. WD! EH O o o m Eh cg Ph o ft Heavy Sentence.
