Charles Lamb's Wit. Instances of
Lamb's humor, says Barry Cornwall, are
easy to" trie t with. A school mistress
ence asked him for some sign indicative
of her calling, an J he recommended "The
Murder of th Innocents." -;: -
I once, said eomcthing which I thought
possessed smartness. 11c commended me
with a stammer : "Very well, my dear
boy, very well ; Ben (taking a pinch of
muff) Johnson has said worse things than
that and h-b-better."
His saying to Martin Burney has often
been repeated : "Oh, Martin, if dirt
were trumps, what a hand you would
hold I" ....
To Coleridge : "Bless you, old soph
ist, who next to human oature taught mo
all the corruption I was capable of know
ing !"
To Mrs. II., of - a person eccentric :
"Why does not his guardian angel look
after him ? He deserves one. Maybe
he has tired him out V
To a Frenchman setting up Voltaire's
character in opposition to Christ's : tl Vol
taire was a very good Jesus Christ for
the French !" , '..; - . ::
Once, while waiting iu the Highgaie
stage, a woman came to the door and in
quired, in a stern voice, f'Are you quite
full inside?"' "Yes, ma'am," said'Lamb,
"quite ; that-plateful of Mrs. Gilman's
pudding has quito filled us." '
Mrs. K., after expressing her love for
young children, added, "And how do you
like babies, Mr. Lamb ?" His answer,
immediate, almost precipitate, was, "Boi-boi-boiled,
ma'am !"
DitorriNG tue "1J." A' schoolmaster
was hearing one of his pupils read, and
the boy, when he came to the word "hon
or," pronounced it lull; the master told
him it should be pronounced without the
II, as thus 'onor.
"Very well, sir," replied the lad, "I
will remember for the future."
"Ay," said the master; "always drop
the II." - . ' . -
The next morning, the master's lea,
with a hot muffin, had leen. brought to
his desk ; but the .duties of his vocatiou
made him wait till it was cold ; when,
addressing the same boy," he told him. to
take it to the fre aDd heat ic. .
"Yes, sir," replied the scholar, and
taking it to the fire, he ate it.
Presently the master called for his
muffin. . i .v ..
"I have eat it as you bade me," replied
the boy. . ...
''Eat it, you scouudrel ! . I bade you
tale it to tho fire and heat it."
"But sir," answered the lad, "yesterday
you told me always to drop the II." '

Badly Sold. When Colonel 'Billy
Wilsou's Zouaves, of predatory notoriety,
were encamped on Statun Island, in 1861,
soma, bpnevoleat . persons, . in .New "York,
tock np a collection to supply the lambs)
with hymn books and chewing tobacco.
The committee with the lunds went
down to Staten Island, passed through the
camp, inspected the lambs in their tents,
and fiually'came to Colonel "Billy's head
quarters. The chairman made a neat
speech, then putting his hand' into his
pocket, discovered that the -money was
gone.
"I had, it," said he, "when I reached
the camp." . ' .
Says Colonel Billy, "I guess it's all
right ; some ot the boys have got it.
Adjutant, just inquire who's lilted the

Messrs. R: E.' Sellers & Co i This is to

condition, and urged me to try a bottle of
"Johnson's Rheumatic Compound." I fol
