.An Unfortunate' Stranger. "Can
you tell we," said a stranger to a pentle
lnan in a ball room, "who that lady is,
iit&r the second widow that very plain
looking lady V
.'That is iny sister," sir," replied the
person addressed, with a very formidable
look.
"No, no, I don't mean her," said the
unfortunate interrogator, "T mean that
ngly woman leaning against the piano;
there's about as much expression in her
lace as in a bowl of bonny clabber."
"That, sir, is my wife."
"No, no," gasped the miserable Gran
ger, the perspiration starting from every
pore. "Good gracious! I wish I could
make you understand mc ! I mean that
blear-eyed object in the pink ilk, the one
bo aveful homely. I should be afraid she
would splinter a locking-glass by looking
into it. There, she is looking at U3 now."
"That, sir," said ths gentleman, with
fierce calmness, "is my oldest daughter."
.The 6trangcr darted from the room and
cleared the premises as though he had
been struck with a preeentimeut that a
powder magazine was going to explode in
that room in less than three seconds.
Longer or Shorter. Once upon a
time, a man- stole a codfish from a store
keeper, while the latter's back was turn
ed, and bid it under his coat-rail. Now,
it chanced that the garment was too small
to entirely cover the fhh, and the store
keeper discovered the situation of affairs.
But he held his peace. -r
Not so the thief. Knowing himself to
be dishonest, he felt particularly anxious
to'make others believe him honest.
"Mr. Merchant," said he, "I have tra
ded with you a great deal, and have paid
Tou up honestly and promptly, have I
"not ?"
"Oh, yes," answered the merchant, "I
make no complaint."
"Well," said the customer, "I always
insisted that honesty was the best policv,
and the best rule to live and die by."
"That's so," replied the merchant.
The customer turued to depart.
"Hold on, friend," cried the merchant,
"speaking of honesty, I have a bit of
advice to give you whenever you come
to trade again, you had better wear a
longer coat, or steal a shorter codfish."
Hoaxing a Green One. The citi
eens, members of the Wisconsin Legisla
ture, and others, had a rich time at
Madison, tho other day. An innocent
Chicagoman, named Swanburg, advertised
in the Chicago Tribune for a wife. He
was answered by a young fellow of Mad
ison, under the name of a young lady, who
etatcd that she was ready to receive his
proposals and invited him to visit her.
lie went, met the supposed young lady,
and immediately proposed to elope with
her. He was immediately arrested by a
bogu9 officer for attempting abduction,
and tried by a bogus court in the Court
House. The whole proceedings were
carried on with great gravity, and the
victim had not the remotest idea but that
the whole thing was a sad reality. After
standing tho ordeal of a two hours' trial,
he was finally released on condition that
he would leave town immediately. This
ho did on a train leaving for Milwaukee
just in the nick of time.
New Tragedy. A uew tragedy, by
the poet laureate of Kansas, is in process
of construction. When completed, it will
be called "The Two Loafers of Arkansas."
The following is an extract from the ad
vance sheets :
Tarnation seiz mc if I bear the taunts
Of this young Locofoco I Skin a coon ?
'Twere easy ! Aye, and ask to do more
To wbip my weight in wildcats to dive
For alligators tin the turbid stream,
And having ta'en thtru by the tugged throats.
To wrench their entrails from their jagged
jaws
And fling upon the bank why, that were but
A summer evening's pi J.V 1 There's not a boy
Within Arkansas but might do the snme,
And alter, clamber to the squirrel's nest
And rob it of its nuts. Shall the base loafer,
Thau whom the juue-bug which the night
hawks crack
Is in creation's creation greater of account,
Chaw me so catawampously ? Away
'Tia night be red, my bowie-knife, ere day."

RHEUMATIC COM
POUND !
No medieiee for the cure of Rheumatism
has ever attained to such a high degree of
favor and universality as
JOHNSON'S RHEUMATIC COMPOUND.
Although but on year before the public,
this medicine has justly gained an unbounded
popularity. When the originator first intro
duced it, he was convinced of its efficacy, but
he little supposed it wa3 destined to prove
such an inestimable blessing to the afflicted.
But "true merit' cannot be suppressed.
The attestation of hundreds who have been
cured by its use, must prove the truth of the
assertion,
'TnAT IT IS A RADICAL CURATIVE'
TOU
INFLAMMATORY AND ACUTE RHEUMA
TISM, GOUT, NEURALGIA, AJTD
KINDRED DISEASES.
"We recommend it with confidence as
THE GREAT INTERNAL REMEDY,
For the Speedy and Positive Cure of the
above Complaints.
Messes. R. E. Selleks & Co : This is to
certify that for the last sixteen years I have
been severely afflicted with rheumatism, of
ten confined to my house, and even unable to
walk. Being in the Postoffice, about two
months ago, Mr. Clark observed my crippled
condition, and urged me to try a bottle of
"Johnson's Rheumatic Compound." I fol
lowed his advice aud now, by the blessing ot
God, and the use of half a bottle of your
' Compound," I am free from all symptoms
of rheumatism, and can walk without the aid
of my staff, as well a3 evr.
