temperance meeting was held in the Pres
byterian church on Monday night..v.The
"Band of Hope," a juvenile choir taught
during the winter by Rev. Mr. Ellis, gave
two concerts last week, both-of which
were well attended... .The blue bird made
its first appearance here on Monday.. .The
roads are in shocking condition from the
mud.. ..The coming wheat crop is said
by the farmers to present a healthy ap
pearance. The fruit crop is also repre
sented to be promising.. ..The Pa. R. R.
Company intend erecting a station house
at Lily's Station, Cambria county, the
coming summer. Such an institution
has long been needed there.. ..The "im
mortal" J. N. Free was in Altoona the
other day.. ..The Cincinnati Express ran
over a woman near Conemaugh station, on
Thursday last. She was struck by the
bumper oi the locomotive and thrown a
considerable distance, but strange to say,
was only slightly injured. She got up
soon afterward and walked away.

Sad Occurrence. On Tuesday of
last week, as the children were returning
to their homes from what it known as the
Weakland schoolhouse, in Alleghany tp.,
this county, a number of the boys became
engaged in a wrestling match, and during
the progress of the contest some two or
three of the boys fell upon a lad . named
William Feighter, son of Mr. Sebastian
Fcighter, and injured him so severely that
he died on Thursday evening following.

To the Editor 'The Alleghanian : ' '
A couple of weeks ago, you'inade a
suggestion through your columns that our
newly elected borough officials make out
and publish a statement oi the present fi
nancial condition of - the borough, ' The
suggestion struck me then and strikes me
yet as a good one.' It ia a good rule to
require of our servants prompt account of
their stewardship. If a statement of the
kind mentioned has been published with
in the past five or six years, I have failed
to see it. I pay, in the course of a year,
more or less of tax levied for borough
purposes. Now, I have no doubt the
money is rightly applied ; but I feel a
laudable curiosity to know tehere it goes to.
What is the money wanted for? what is
there to show for its disbursement?
In my opinion, the board of borough
authorities that fails to publish each year
a statement of the receipts and expendi
tures of the borough, and an exhibit. of
its general financial condition, is remiss
in its duties toward the people. M. .
