We remember to have heard it prognosticated, last fall, that tie then pending winter would be an excessively severe one. This prog-' nosticalion was based upon an assumed relationship existing between animate and inanimate nature and tho atmosphere, by a due observance of which, the changes or peculiarities of the latter may be fore shown with barometrical accuracy. Thus, the fact that wild animals in considerable numbers forsook their usual haunts in the fastnesses of the forest toward winter and congregated near the habitations of men, was explained on the hypothesis that they were fleeing from the wrath to come of King Boreas ; and thus, the fact that the growing corn was clothed with an addi tional husk or two, was held to mean a provision of nature for protection against bitter-biting blasts. Well, for once, a weather-wise prophecy has come true. The present is a severe winter. The win ter of '64-5 was written dorn in the rec ord a hard one, but it couldn't hold a tin whistle to this. In fact, the present is the coldest, and roughest, and blowiest, and bitingest old winter we have had since '55-6. Then the snow was four feet deep on the level and ten feet deep on the drift, with the mercury in the thermom eter a fixity in the neighborhood of zero ) now the snow is as deep and the drifts as unfathomable, while the thermometer is only of practical use when, pickled in whiflkv to keen it from freeziosr. We n ' may add that snow is still falling, so that it is among the possibilities that we may yet be obliged to enter our houses thro' the second story windows. Of "wurse, with all this, our Branch Ratlwad is snowed up. Snowed up for the third time this winter and we, in common with many other excellent fellows and fellow-citizens, are out of coal. The turnpikes leading in every direction, ex cept to Cresson, are also hermetically sealed. On Thursday, we had no mail. Since then, however, communication has been opened up, and two lines of sleigh hacks (MooTe & Thompson's "Blockade Runner," and Lem. and Sam. Davis' "Snow Plough") now run twice a day each to Cresson, carrying the mails and passengers. Oh, it's awful this weather! No coal nobody in town no business no going round o' nights no enjoyment no nothing that's right and good. Be sides, the pumps are nearly all froze up. But, then, what's the use of water when there is no coal to make the kittle boil ! We wonder whether other towns are af flicted like unto this ! And just thiuk of it ! to cap the climax of our miseries, we overheard one of those locg-faced in dividuals who deal in weather prognosti cations pay that tho storm and cold weath er are going to last till March. We learn from the Johnstown Tribune that a terrible ac cident occurred in one of the ore mines of the Cambria Iron Company, on the 12th, by which two Englishmen, named Dunn aod Hotchkios, were instantly, killed, The accident was the result of a prema ture explosion of a blast. Dunn leaves a wife and five children in England. The other was a young man and unmarried. "Saturday Nigiit." Anybody desi ring a first-class literary hebdomadal should subscribe for Saturday Fight.
