An Obliqino Agent. Some years
ago, shortly alter the introduction of the
Illinois Central Kail raid through that
portion known as "Egypt," an honest
countryman, who lived some forty vear
or thereabouts, io blissful igoorooco of
everything pertaining to the keera," was
appointed station agent at C , one of the
little out-of-the-way places where, os
Dickens say?, "do one. could by any pospi
bility want to get off or on." On receiv
ing his instructions, he was told amocg
other things, that as U was merely a
flag station,'' trains would stop only when
one wished tu get off or on ; and that if
ho wauted to stop any traiu, Le Loust
"fla-" it.
r-'hortly after h's appointment, mccrJ
ingly, as the "mail"' came thundering on,
he placeJ the magic red flag in position,
the signal to stop. As the car drew up
to the station, ttio conductor jumped ofl
on the platform, with his accustomed,
'All aboard," at the same time asking,
"Any passengers to ret on V
'Wa'ul, not as 1 know3 cf;" was the
puzzled reply.
"Then what do you Btop the train for V
ehouttd the irritated conductor.
"I didn't know butfome an might want
to get off," said tho obliging agent in a
conscious tone ol injured innocence.

A Good Day's Work. Dut in Mich
igan a number of farmers were sitting in
front of a country store at the close cf a
eultry day, and telling stories about their
work, and so on, when one of them took
the rag off the whole of them by relating
his experience.
"I say, you have all toll whopping big
yarns, now ; but I'll just tell you what I
done once in York State, on the Ganueseee
Flats, and on my father's farm He
owned a meadow just a milo long, and
one morning in June I began to mow
Eun about an hour high and mowed
right along the whole leDgth of the fieid.
The grass was so heavy that I had to mow
down to the lower end of the field, and
walk back, or a3 we say, 'carry my swath.'
Well, I worked on until sundown, and
then quit. I just thought, as the meadow
wa9 exactly a mile long, I'd count the
swaths and I did so, and there was one
hundred ! That, gentlemen, is what York
State folks call a big day's work."
"So you walked two hundred miles
that day, did you ?" asked one farmer.
"And mowed half the time you were
walking ?" said another.
"So it seems," replied the great mower,
"I tell you the fact, and you can make of
it as jou can."
Two Sides of One Transaction. A
few days since, wiites a friend, as I was
sitting with Brother D., in his office in
Court Square, a client came in and said :
"Squire D. V., the etablcr shaved me
dreadfully yesterday, and I want to come
uo to him."
"State your case," says D.
"I asked him how much he wou!d
charge me fur a bore and wagon to go to
Dedhnm. lie said one dollar and a half,
but said he wanted another dollar and a
half lor coming back, and made me pjy
it." "
D. gave him some legal advice, which
was acted upon as follows :
He went to the stabler and said :
"Ilow much will you charge me f'jr a
horse and wagon to to Salem ?"
Stabler replied, "l'ivf dailar--."
"Harness bim up."
Client went to Salem, came back by
railroad, went to the stable, and said :
"Here is your money," paying him five
dollars.
"Where is my horse and wagon ?" savs
w. .
"ITe is at Salem," says client; "I only
hired him to go to Salem."
Couldn't be Bluffed. Four persous
had seated themselves in the minos to play
a game of poker the ante, as a substitute
for money, being a haudful of gold dust.
They continued playing some time with
out either side winning much. At ipngth
one of the party, who had a good hand,
went a handful "better."
"I see that, and go a pint better !'
cried out another, who also had a strong
hand.
"I sec tli -it," responded the first, "and
go a quart better !"
"Well, I sco that, and go a gallon bet
ter !" said the other.
This rather disconcerted his adversary
for a moment as it "oversized hi?? pile."
But, confident in the superior strength of
his hand, he collected together all the
gold dust he had left, and, putting it
aside, coolly remarked to ono of his com
panions, "Here, Jim, watch my pile until
I go out and dlj enowjh in coll him !"
