    A Wk3Teh Politician. A corre
Epondent tells the following capital anec
dote of .Arkansas p)litical life: About
twenty years ago, Governor Y and
Judge W wore candidates for Con
gress in this district, Tlicy were both
far-sighted, shrewd politicians the
Judge the better Iuwjct and debater the
Governor by far the moro winning in his
manners, as the sequel will fully establish.
One hot day in July, while they were
traveling together on the canvass, they
eaine upon a party of twenty men or more
assembled on the roadside for the purpose
cf having a shooting match. Thinking it
a good time and place for presenting their
respective claims, the Governor proposed
fctopping. They halted, and the Govern
or soon made himself at Lome. He
bought a number of chances in the match,
and being a'good marksman, f uceeeded in
winning quite a quantity cf beef, which
constituted the prize.
The Judge had conscientious scruples
as to shooting matches, and did not par
ticipate, but ttood by, conversing with the
more sober of the crowd, while his friend,
the Governor, was in high glee with his
companions over the beef. When it was
given out to successful shooters, our Gov
ernor ordered his to be divided among
some widows who he ascertained lived in
the vicinity, and then aeked the boys if
they were not dry 1 Of course they were,
and the Governor generously ordered a
plcntilul supply of the "Oh be joyful."
Here the Judge had scruples and did not
participate ; but had it been otherwise it
would have availed nothing. The Gov
ernor was decidedly the man at the shoot
ing match, while the Judge felt himself
entirely in the vocative. Leaving their
friends, they proceeded on their way eome
twelve or fifteen miles, and halted at a
camp-ground where the annual camp
lneeting was being held. They separated
in tho crowd, each electioneering with all
his might, with old and young, friends
and strangers making hay when the Bun
shone for there was a fine opening.
Towards night the Judge began to look
around for his distinguished opponent, but
could not find him anywhere. lie waited
patiently till evening services began, and
concluded he would go out where the peo
ple had assembled tor meeting, thinking
perhaps he might meet his friend. On
going out. what was his astonishment to
find the gallant Governor, the hero of the
shooting match, in front of the altar, sur
rounded by ministers and class-leaders,
with a hymn book in his hand, head
thrown back, siDging as loud as his lungs
would permit,
How firm a foundation yesaints of tbeLord."
"From that moment," said the Judge,
"I gave up all hopes. I tell you I tell
you, Eir, a man that's good for a camp
meeting and a shooting match, can't be
beat for Congress. It can't be done sir."
And bo it proved.
Not a Christian. An accident hap
pened on the Atlantic arid -Great Western
railroad, in Ohio, says tho MeadviPe
Eejnilllcan. The baggage master eat in
his car reading at the time, but perceiv
ing by the motion of tho car that an
accident had taken place, he attempted to
jump out, but was caught between two
cars and badly jammed. lie was taken
out in an insensible condition, and being
laid upon the ground, an attempt was
made to revive him, which proved suc
cessful. As he opened his eyes to &
consciousness of things, a clergyman
stepped out from the circle who surroun
ded him, to offer a prayer for his complete
restoration. He .kneeled down by the
side of the victim, but before proceeding
with his work. of mercy, he asked the
youth, "Are you a Christian ?" "No,
sir," a3 emphatically as his condition
would allow, said the sufferer, "I am a
baggage master on the Atlantic and Great
Western railroad!" TLo prajer rras
omitted.
Too Sharp. An amusing incident i3
told of a woman in England, whose hus
band, a wealthy man, died suddenly,
without leaving any will. The widow,
desirous of securing (he whole of the
property, concealed her husband's de-th,
and persuaded a poor shoemaker to take
his place while a will could be made.
Accordingly he was closely muffled in bed,
os if very eick, and a lawyer wa9 called in
to write the will. The shoemaker, in a
feeble voice, bequeathed half of all the
property to the widow. "What shall be
done with the remainder ?" asked the
lawyer. "Tho remainder," replied he, "I
give and bequeath to the poor littlo shoe
maker across the street, who has always
been a good neighbor and a deserving
man thus securing a rich bequest
for himself. The widow was thunder
struck with the man's audacious cunning,
but did not dare expose the fiand, and so
two rogues shared the cstato.
