On Monday night last, the jewelry store of C. T. Roberts, on High atrect, was feloniously entered by some party unknown, and de spoiled of a portion of its contents. In gress was secured by removing a panel from the rear door, which was done by tho aid ot auger and chisel. The depre dator helped himself liberally to articles in the store, ' takinjr some six or seven fine revolvers and a lot of prepared car tridges, a number of gold pens, with and without holders, an accordeon, &c, &c. The loss, so far as is ascertained, is in the neighborhood of $200. The bur glar left behiud him a brace and bit and a chisel. The brace was identified and claimed by Mr. David Jones, of the East Ward, and was stolen f rum his carpenter uhop5 the chisel was not identified. Mr. Roberts, the proprietor, was awiy from homo on the night of the robbery, and no one slept on the premises, so the burglar had an open field for his nefarious opera tions.' DUUHtlSS M XH NEWS MABKET ACCIDENT SICBLHESS "AND HEALTH! -VARl'STY. " Johnstown May 2l, 1866. News of a local character calculated to interest t be 'general' reader is scarce here. About the usual number of police items might be detailed, but these are becoming so intimately connected with our every-day history as to bo scarcely worthy special mention. 'From the number of persons returned for violation of liquoT and license laws, I would anticipate a large amount of business in the Quarter Sessions at the approaching term of our Court. There are also a goodly number of misdemeanors to be disposed of, such as assault, assault and battery, &c. Mr. Maurice Lewis had a narrow escape from su"dden death the other day. He was engaged with a number of hands in removing a huge rock of Beveral tons weight from the mouth' of a drift in one of the mines of the Company, and while in a stooping posture . the heavy stone sud denly and unexpectedly fell, striking him in the small of the back and injuring him severely. During last week, cholera morbus, or some disease akin thereto, prevailed to an alarming extent here. Too much care cannot be taken at this season of the year to ward off such attacks, and the man who, through persistent disregard of the rules of health, "prepares his system for disease, is criminally guilty of courting eelf-destractioc. , Everybody is complaioingof the drouth ,d praying for rain. The streets are almn- constantly enveloped in a cloud of dust, whiV.'1 makea lt anything but pleas ant for pedest',an3- ! : . T-ETTERS remaining UNCLAIMED The Politic 4l Situation. Dear Alleyhanian : Candidates for nomination at the hands of the Dem. Co. Convention are becoming plenty as tadpoles in a body of stagnant water under an August sun. At least a score of men go to bed each night and waken up next rooming, candi dates and famous. In addition to the names I gave you last week of persons who might possibly be prevailed upon to ac cept official position,. the following might be mentioned : For Associate Judge, Major John Flanagan, ot Johnstown ; for Commissioner, Fred. Kittell, of Ebens burg, John Furguson, of Blacklick,Dick Detling, of Washington, Joseph Behe and Frank Bearer, of Carroll. For the re maining offices, a host of names are brot. forward, all of which "want of time and room" prevents me mentioning just now. In the matter of the Associate Judgeship, Johnstown is most wofully behind, for that she has as yet presented only riro aspirants for the office, , whereas Ebens burg has presented four. ' To make mat ters and things even in this respect as between the two towns, I would suggest the names of Messrs. n. D. Woodruff & Son, of Johnstown, in connection with the office. Edward Glass is the retiring Commissioner. I do not know whether he desires re-election or not ; if he does, the Dcms. might go further after a can didate and fare worse. The various aspirants are busy making metaphorical hay while the sun shines. They all travel with their pockets cram med with bon-bons for the children, I notice, and dispeuse cigan to the men folk and smiles to the women-folk with lavish munifioence. With regard to the matter of bon-bons, Harry Devine has the mercantile advantage over his competitors of procuring the. toothsome morselsat "first cost;" while the same can be said of Reese Lloyd with regard to cigars. - But the persuasive power of a smile for elec tioneering purposes. is most potent, and not unfrequently outweighs all considera tions connected with bon-bon3 and cigars. I consider Michael Hassan the most sue ce.sful smiler of them all. I understand the Dem. Co. Convention will be called tomeet on Monday, the 18th day of June. Observer. New Schedlle.
