Signs of Cold Weather. Punch notices the following signs of a cold snap : It ia probably sharp winter weather When you think, that yen don't know whether the fmt bell has been rung or not. ., . . , When it strike?, you think that your watch is at. least ten minutes fast; and so if vou get up when the minute hand is at " a'quartcr to" you'll be in capital tiiue. That it you could only be taken oat of bed to be washed and dressed in a second by machinery, you wouldn't mind getting up- p That another five minutes' sleep would moke you feci all right for the day. That it's three minutes to the half hour,, and you'll get up exactly at the half-hosr. That it's just one minute past the half hour, so you'll get up exactly at the thirty live minutes. That is five minutes won't make much difference, say, get up exactly at the quar ter punctually. The following considerations will also lead you to the conclusion that winter has come at last : That you can't get up without hot wa ter. " That you don't think the water is quite hot. That ho had better bring a little more water, please; and take care it's. quite hot. That you can't get up till your clothes are all ready for you. That a little snooze while James is bringing the clothes, (and while he fetches some more hot water,) will do you all thf good in the world. That when you get up "you won't be a second dressing. That you'll get up in exactly two min utes from now. That (the two' minutes having pissed,") you'll just settle what you're goim; to do :o-day, and then get up. That, if that's, the first bell, yotfve plenty of time ; and if it's the second, it's no good hurrying up now, as you're late anyhow. The consideration that is generally re quired before making a move out of bed, is in itself a pretty sure sign of the pres ence of winter. A Strange Lord. In 1774 Burke's Peerage, or its predecessor, if it was not extant ot that time, was better understood in the English Parliament than the Bible. In that year Dr. Webster was a popular preacher of the kirk of Scotland, in Edin burgh Business brought him to London, and one day when passiug the House of Lords, his curiosity induced him to make an effort to sec' them. 'None were admit ted without an order, except noblemen's servants. Webster being ignorant of the rule, requested admittance. " What Lord do you belong to?'' asked the doorkeeper. " To the Lord Jehovah," replied Web ster. "To the Lord Jehovah?" queried the doorkeeper ; "I have kept here seven years but have not heard of such a Lord. Jack," said he to his fellow-keeper on the front steps, ".here 13 a chap who says he be longs to the Lord Jehovah ! Do you know such a Lord V " Never heard of him," said Jack. " But," said the Doctor, " there is such a Lord." ... " Pass 'im in." said Jack ; " I suppose it's some poor Scotch Lord. .This occurred at a period when there was not one in twenty of ail the manu facturing and rural districts in England who could read the Bible or write his own name. At the expiration ci that time Jones cavea jc, and the highwayman commenced rifting his pocke's.' The contents amount ed to eighteen cents. ; " Is that all you've got?" ': Every cent."
