: .How to Breathe. There Is ono rule
to ba observed in taking exercise bv walk
ing the very best form in which it can
bo taken by tbo young and able-bodied of
all ages and that 13 never to allow the
action of respiration to be carried on
through the mouth. The nasal passages
are clearly the medium through which
respiration was designed by our Creator
- to be carried on. "God breathed into
" ; man's nostrils the breath of lifo" previous
to his becoming a living creature. The
difference in the exhaustion of strength
by a long walk with the mouth firmly
closed, and respiration carried on through
the nostrils instead of through the mouth,
is inconceivable to those who have never
tried the experiment. And, indeed, this
mischievous and really unnatural habit of
carrying on the work ol inspiration and
respiration through the mouth instead of"
through the nasal passages is the true
origin of .almost all the diseases cf the
throat and lungs, is bronchitis, congestion,
- asthma, and even consumption itself'. That
exeessivo respiration to which some indi-
viduals arc so liable in their sleep, which
is so weakening to the body, is solely the
effect of such persons sleeping with their
mouths unclosed. The same unpleasant
. and exhaustive results arise to the animal
system . from walking with the mouth
opeD, instead of, when not engaged in
conversation," preserving the lips in a state
of firm but quiet compression. As the
heat and velocitv of tho blod through the
lungs depend almost entirely upon the
quantity of the atmospheric air inhaled
with each inspiration, and it is unavoida
ble that it should be taken in volume, by
the mouth, while it can only be supplied
in moderate quantities, and just in suffi
cient proportion to serve the purpose of
a healthy, respiratory action, while sup
plied through the nostrils', it is clear that
the body must bo much lighter and cooler
and also the breathing muoh freer and
easier when the latter course rather than
tho former one is adopted. Children
ought never to be allowed to stand or
walk with their mouths open ; for besides
the vacant appearance it gives to the
counlenance, it is the certain precursor
of eolds, and sore throats.
" A Powerful Argument. A West
ern pettifogger once broko forth in the
following indignant , strain : "Sir, we're
enough for tho hull of ye. Me and my
client can't never be intimidated nor ty
ranized over mark that. And, 6ir, just
so sure as this Court decides against us,
we'll file a writ of progrander, sir, and!
we !i ;
He was interrupted by the opposite
counsel, who wanted to know what he
meant by a writ of progrander.
"Mean!" yelled tha pettifogger, "why,
sir, a writ of progrander is a a a a
it's a wall, I don't just remember the
exact word, but it's what will knock thun
der out of your one-horse court, anyhow!"
A Slip of the Tongue Recently a
young lady went into a certain book store
lor the purpose of purchasing a piece of
music entitled, "When I sloep I dream of
thee," but by cne of those ludicrous mis
takes which will sometimes happen in the
best-regulated families, she astonished the
young gentleman of the store by inqui
ring if hchad the music entitled, "When
I dream I sleep with thee!" What the
clerk replied is not of record.
C$"Will you permit a lady to occupy
this seat?'' eaid 003 gentleman to another
the other day, in a railroad car.
"Is she an advocate of woman's rights?"
asked the gentleman who wa3 invited to
vacate.
"She is,'; politely replied he who was
standiug.
"Well, lhcn, let her take the benefit of
her doctrines, and stand up."
EQfA. young prince having requested
his tutor to instruct him in religion, and
teach him to say his prayers, was answer
ed that he was too young. "That cannot
be," said the little boy, 'for I have been
in the burial ground and measured the
graves, and I found many of them shorter
than myself."
T,It is reportud that more men died
at Audersonville than were killed and
wounded in the British army in all the
great battles in tho Peninsular war in
Spain and" Portugal.
