Clean Pigs and Dirty Pigs la
the Mark'Lane'Expre, the leading Brit
ish farming newspaper, there are always
to be' found useful arttc'es applicable to
the daily necessities . of farmers.- In a
lato lumber. is thc.followicjr, which every
hojj-raWr, wVo knows anything about the
business, must confess to be correet : . .
?'Pigs have the reputation : of a real
liking- ior dirt j and, certainty, the tray
iii ' which " they are kept on some farms
would show that their owners are deter
mined to. give them ample opportunity for
carrying out this liking. No notion can,
however, be more erroneous than this,
as none is certainly so productive of loss
to the keeper. Let any one not convinced
o this try the two mode of pig-keeping
the dirty and the clean tho food iD
both case, and other general treatment
being the fame,- and the result will show
him which of the two id the best. A
great deal depends upon the manner
in which they are housed. Mr. Raines,
of Mills,' adopts the following :
"A large out-house is enclosed at the
sides fo a to be warm and dry. The
floor is paved and sprinkled with burnt
tiny and nshts, obtai&ed by burning weeds.
In this tho pigs are fed ; while for renting
aud sleepiug they, have a common com
partment railed off at the other eud, am
ply provided with clean straw. In anoth
er ca.e box feediug has been applied, the
pigs being kept in a pit, into which the
manure Iroiu the ox and cow stables aud
the horse stables ' is put. The pigs tread
this down and seem to enjoy themselves
amazingly. In one case where this has
betn '. adopted, the farmer states that his
pigs have, 'given him a profit by their
meat, and left the dung as good as guano
for nothing.'"
Points or a Good Cow. Tho follow
ing are given as the points desirable for a
good ..milker : The bead rather small,
wide .across the eyes, nostrils open and
ppreading. The eyes should be large, full,
bright, and expressive of mildness and
intelligence, tho ears thin, neck small at
its juncture with the bead, and full where
it joins the, body, the breast narrower
than. iu cattle de.-igncd lor fattening, the
back straight, the rib less expauding
tha-is- preferred for lattenii.g stock, the
carcass gradually.' enlarging f'Tom.Lthe
chet backwards, the Mud quarters long
and heavy io' proportion to the fore-quarters,
the thighs thinr the tail slender, ex
cept at the upper end, where it should be
large, the legs rather short, small and flat
below the knee and hoek, the skin mellow
and elastic, of a yellowish color, as indi
cating richness of .milk, the hair thickly
set and soft, the udder capacious, spread
ing wide ou the body, but not hanging
lowj-the teats of medium size, widely
separated from each other and placed well
on the forward part of the udder, the milk
veins large, springing out near the fore
legs, and appearing well developed along
the body." ,
Starching Bosoms and Collars
Pour a' pint of boiling water upon two
ounces of gum arsibie, cover it and let it
stand, over night ; in the morning pour it
carefully from the dregs into a clean bot
tlcv aork itiand keep for" future use. A
tab!e-spoonful of this gum arabic water,
stirred int': a piut of starch tnada in the
us;iaf maimer, will. give to lawn, either
white or printed, a look of newness when
nothing, else can restore them after they
have been wa.-hed. To -every pint of
Starch add a piece of butter, laid, fallow. or
spermaceti caudle, the size of .a chestnut.
